Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Justin Berg (Iowa & Tenn: 3-7, 5.21 ERA, 84.2 IP, 41 K/44 BB)

Tennessee: LHP Donnie Veal (4-5, 3.43 ERA, 94.1 IP, 67 K/49 BB)

Daytona: RHP Marco Carrillo (5-5, 2.98 ERA, 84.2 IP, 53 K/23 BB)

Peoria: RHP Robert Hernandez (1-0, 5.22 ERA, 29.1 IP, 28 K/8 BB)

Boise: RHP Casey Coleman (1-0, 4.00 ERA, 9 IP, 12 K/4 BB)

Mesa: RHP Miguel Sierra (1-0, 4.76 ERA, 11.1 IP, 5 K/4 BB) & RHP Chris Huseby (0-0, 63.00 ERA, 1 IP, 0 K/8 BB)

Mesa's starters are just best guesses; as always, they're subject to rehabbers or prospects making their debuts or former big leaguers trying to find their release point. I suspect we'll also see Toby Matchulat at Mesa today.

Nothing that I've heard, I've checked but the local Boise papers and the Hawks' web site to no avail.

Tennessee is already up 3-0 after the top of the 1st. Colvin hit a sac fly and Jake Fox followed with another 2-run HR.

Veal was shaky in the first...

* John Raynor homers (7) on a line drive to left field.

* Dante Brinkley grounds out, third baseman Josh Lansford to first baseman Kyle Reynolds.

* Gaby Sanchez strikes out swinging.

* Alberto Concepcion doubles (8) on a line drive to left fielder Jake Fox.

* Lee Mitchell walks.

* With Andrew Jenkins batting, wild pitch by Donald Veal, Alberto Concepcion to 3rd. Lee Mitchell to 2nd.

* Andrew Jenkins grounds out, second baseman Matt Matulia to first baseman Kyle Reynolds.

But he recovered nicely in the second...

* Brett Hayes called out on strikes.

* Grant Psomas flies out to center fielder Tyler Colvin.

* Tim Corcoran strikes out swinging.

Donnie gives up a walk and a hit in the 4th but works around it by picking them both off! 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.

13 combined strikeouts between the two starters through 4.

Sounds more like the Donnie Veal who blazed through the FSL in 2006.

Veal doesn't get out of the 6th but Ed Campusano makes sure no more runs score off Veal:

Dante Brinkley flies out to right fielder Doug Deeds.

Gaby Sanchez grounds out, third baseman Josh Lansford to first baseman Kyle Reynolds.

Alberto Concepcion walks.

Pitcher Change: Edward Campusano replaces Donald Veal, batting 9th.

Lee Mitchell walks. Alberto Concepcion to 2nd.

Andrew Jenkins flies out to right fielder Doug Deeds.

Donnie's final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, 1 HR, 4 GO-2 FO.

Between Campusano and Reinhard, the Smokies blew a 7-1 lead in the 7th and 8th innings. Looks like we're headed to extras.

Smokies won in the 10th inning on a Tyler Colvin double in the top of the inning followed by a save by Ceda.

Right about now would be a perfect time to have a 1st round selection actually producing like one so the GM could include his name in trade discussions.

Ceda has really put up some great numbers sense being promoted to AA. I really like him in the bullpen, and not as a starter. 17 K's and 2 walks in AA so far and a 1.50 ERA is very promising.

-Plus Fastball

-Slider with plus potential

-Large frame which potentially could have allowed Ceda to be a 200+ inning pitcher per season with relative ease.

-Starting forced Ceda to work on his offspeed pitches.

-Likely has a higher upside than any of our Starting Pitching prospects.

I think those are all quality reasons why the Cubs should have allowed Jose Ceda's tenure in the rotation to continue. Plus considering Ceda's Daytona WHIP his ERA likely would have improved had his level of effectiveness stayed the same.

Agreed. I was hoping he'd at least stick in the rotation all this season even though the Cubs have been dead set on making him a reliever since last year.

Micah Hoffpauir, Marco Carrillo and Luis Bautista got some awards for their work last week:

Pacific Coast League Player of the Week

Micah Hoffpauir, Iowa

.485 (16-33), 8 R, 8 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO, 0 SB, 1.000 SLG

If not for a clouded roster, Hoffpauir would be with the Chicago Cubs right now. The first baseman could hardly have done more to impress Cubs brass in an 11-game callup in June, when he hit .421 over 19 at-bats. Sent back to Iowa because of a numbers game, Hoffpauir seems to be clamoring for a return trip. On the week, Hoffpauir had an extra-base hit in every game, now a nine-game streak. He has had at least two hits in six consecutive games and has scored a run in his last seven contests. For the season, Hoffpauir has 40 RBIs in 29 games with the I-Cubs.

Florida State League Pitcher of the Week

Marco Carrillo, Daytona

1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO

The Cubs moved Carillo from the bullpen to the starting rotation at the beginning of May, and at the outset, the decision yielded mixed results. Carillo lost his first two starts, but then responded with a one-hit, seven-inning shutout May 13. He would win his next two decisions, before going on his second consecutive losing streak entering June. Carillo earns a spot this week not only on the strength of his outing on July 2, but also a win with six scoreless innings he pitched on June 27. However, it's still his last outing that takes precedence, and it marked the first time that Carillo pitched eight innings in his career. The Mexican right-hander allowed just three baserunners, induced two double plays, and kept St. Lucie at bay to return to .500 (5-5) for the season, as well as .500 (4-4) in decisions since he became a starter.

Midwest League Player of the Week

Luis Bautista, Peoria

.524 (11-21), 6 R, 4 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB, 0 SO, 1 SB, 1.143 SLG

At 23 years old, there's no question that Bautista is a little old for the Midwest League. But that's likely to change soon, as the league's best-hitting catcher is due for a promotion. It wasn't until June 15 this season that Bautista hit his first home run with the Chiefs, but after three this week, his season total now stands at eight. Friday was his first multi-homer game of the season, leading Peoria to a 9-7 win in a game that featured three players with two home runs. Even more impressive is that Bautista has not struck out since June 27, a streak that has survived over his last eight games.

And on the day Carrillo gets the pitcher of the week award for last week, he's getting tagged. 5 earned through 2.
