if the Brewers land Sabathia, any 4-5 combo of Marquis, Marshall, and Gallagher wont be good enough. Parra/Suppan/Bush goes from being a blow average 2-3-4 to being a pretty decent 3-4-5.

If the Brewers get Sabathia, he'll likely be able to make anywhere from 12-15 starts for them, depending on when the trade goes down. Will he make that much of a difference in those starts to overcome 4.5 games in the standings, I don't know. But it could come close to being a push.

I would love it if we got up about 7 games over Milwaukee and they traded for Sabathia. He's not going to make up 7 games, and if he doesnt re-sign with them, they just wasted prospects.

Well they wasted prospects they currently have, but they would also have a good chance at having 5 of the top 40 picks or so if CC and Sheets walked. So they really wouldnt "waste" them, and Id trust their organization with 5 picks a hell of a lot more than Id trust the Cubs.

But they'd be wasted in the sense that what they would pick would not be nearly as close to major-league ready as to what they would give up.

The Brewers have a tough call to make. If Sabathia really is the difference maker for them, it's worth the gamble. On the other hand, if they hold on to LaPorta, Gamel, Escobar, and others; they can use those players to make an off-season trade to replace Sheets if he were to walk. Next year, they will have Gallardo back. Their core of players also will be back, but if they trade their major league ready guys now, they may set themselves back a year or two if both Sheets and Sabathia walk.

If they ride with what they have, they will be in a prime position to use these chips to trade for a player who could replace Sheets on the roster.

It's a tough call for them. In a lot of ways, I'm hoping they trade for Sabathia but that CC is unable to make up the difference.

Sure, the Brewers have a better track record with early round draft picks but either way, prospects at AA are much surer things than a potential draft pick.

Of course thats no doubt. However since LaPorte and Gamel play positions the Brewers already have locked up with young kids. It seems like a no brainer if you can get a guy like CC, and then turn that into 2 1st round pitching talents where they need the help.

Unless they hold on to LaPorta and Gamel and use them to get a pitcher who will replace Sheets when he walks.

For some reason, everytime I think about the Brewers getting Sabathia, I get the feeling that once they do that, Sheets will go down with an injury, neutralizing any gains from the deal.

I've been the same way.

This is a dumb move and I can't wait until we package Gallagher in on a deal for Randy Wolf or something immensely [expletive]

I knew at the beginning of the season the only thing that had to be done was someone to kneecap Marquis to get him out of the rotation, so I know what I need to do.

And if the Brewers end up losing both Sheets, and potentially CC, then they take a step backwards in development. Not only do they lose a couple of top of the line pitchers, but TOP prospects, and now they would either have to sign a pitcher, or use the picks on pitchers. Which means they would have a rotation that has a rehabbing Yovani/Suppan/Marra/Bush, etc. Not a rotation that can win a wild card, much less a rotation.

So, if I am Milwaukee I better be dang sure, I could re-sign CC, if I was going to give up LaPorta plus, for a not-so-guarantee playoff push. And considering who could be available (to me the best available after Sheets and CC---no contractual options--- would be Pedro/Pettite//Garland/Dempster/Lowe and Oliver Perez) this would be a HUGE gamble on Milwaukee's part. In other words, Milwaukee would have to be guarantee two things:

1: A playoff spot.

2: A re-signed CC Sabathia.

And seeing as neither is guarantee right now, it would be a huge gamble.

Baseball, more than any other sport, encourages the ill-conceived blockbuster trade. Lets hope, if this does get finalized, it ends up biting the Brewers in the butt.

Lets also keep in mind that its been 20 odd years since the Brewers have been in the playoffs, and after their mega-collapse there has to be some pressure for them to take some chances

I won't tell (as long as you pay me enough for my silence). :D

Just do it already please... We'll pass the hat to cover your legal defense of the assault & battery charges.

Marshall (1-2) picked up the win, giving up one run on six hits over six innings while striking out four. One of those hits was a solo homer by Ryan Ludwick with one out in the sixth. He'll stay in the rotation, getting his next start Saturday against the San Francisco Giants. Sean Gallagher also stays in the rotation, and Jason Marquis will start Friday.

So now what, are we going with a 6-man until the all star break so Lou can figure out who to bump out of Marshall, Gallagher, and Marquis?

I guess it actually makes sense.

i don't like it because i'd prefer Gallagher over Marquis in the rotation, but i don't think it's a huge deal either for a couple of reasons:

1. aside from 6/21 and 6/26 Marquis has been decent since about mid-May.

2. Gallagher is 22 and i'm not opposed to the idea of getting a guy's feet wet in the majors by pitching him out of the bullpen, if of course you actually use him (which will be a big "if").

3. it lessens the work load for a young pitcher.

4. i'm somewhat hopeful (though not exactly confident) that Marquis will be yanked from the rotation if he starts tanking again (which is likely).

like i said, i wouldn't do this, but i think there are some possible advantages.

Normally a 6-man rotation isn't used especially when there's an off-day involved (as the Cubs have today). I'm guessing this is just a one-time situation this week to buy time until after the break to decide who to bump. I'm OK with it as long as the top starters pitch on normal rest and the lower pitchers get the extra rest.

I don't have much problem taking your back-of-the-rotation, younger pitchers and moving them in & out of the BP. Keeps them fresh, keeps opposing teams from having alot of tape on them. Gally was still able to gain some valuable major league experience. Now rest the arm a little and at some point maybe give us a few more starts.
