Would those of you against a Bonds signing change your tune if he agreed to some sort of drug testing for HGH/steroids every other week or so to prove he's at least playing clean now?

no. my disdain for Bonds has little to do with whether or not he's still using. he's beyond lousy defensively, can't play every day, and in a post-steroid world his age is screaming major injury. provided Edmonds stays healthy, I see no pressing need for offensive upgrades to the outfield unless the Rockies decide to unload Holliday

The Rays need to sign him already.

i hope so, and i hope he kills their annoying team in the process

What in the world is annoying about the Rays?

Well, and their ballpark is completely ridiculous. It should be a crime that a major league game is played there.

I really like what the Rays have done, but there are some legit reasons to find them annoying.

Next time we have an interleague game against them, let's have it on an actual baseball field and see what happens.

One ring of the catwalks is a double, one ring of the catwalks is a home run.

You've made some amazing personal strides in the past 10 hours.

It's pretty simple...gave it a lot of thought and remembered that life is too short to get upset over what someone I don't know and will never meet says on a message board. Plus there are people who go on message boards just to rile others up. Besides, baseball is just a game. It isn't life and death.

I think the bottom line is this: Can you help me got a job with the Cubs? Just a contact would be great.

Why would you want a job for such a short period of time? The new owner is going to come in and clean house. He will want his own people on board. Besides, most don't leave during the season especially a season like this one. They would lost their ticket access.

Aw come on, at least tell us if Cindy Sandberg had more "hits" with (the) Cubs than Rich Hill.

Ryne was retired from the game before I started there. But I can say one thing, those stories are asbolutely false.

Absolutely not. Besides, there isn't enough room in the clubhouse for him to have his own corner with his big barcolounger.

Barry Bonds' agent Jeff Borris makes it clear that none of the 30 teams are interested in his client:

"I am not talking to any club about Barry Bonds, because they all made it very clear to me they are not interested in him. Every club. I can't believe he doesn't have a job. No one has offered even the minimum salary. He made the All-Star team last year, and there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have a repeat performance in 2008, except for the conspiracy against him."

Borris says Bonds could be ready in ten days. Contenders such as the Angels, Rays, Tigers, and A's have gotten subpar performance out of the DH spot but they've all decided to pass on Bonds for various reasons. Borris would have to admit that even some of these clubs would have trouble fitting Bonds onto the roster.

If this is true, Bonds has clearly been black listed. Theres no way some of these teams wouldnt want to give Bonds a try. Hes 44, but last year, he proved he can still hit the ball.

You would have to be stupid to not sign him.

1.000 OPS. Pretty much guaranteed. Who gives a damn what he does in the field.

Shove him in left. Kosuke to center. Surely Soriano can handle right when he comes back. Until then Edmonds can surely handle right until he comes back. Afterwards plenty of at bats for Jim. Or any other OF if he falters. None of those starters are going to be hurt by a little extra time off.

This is the year. You have to go for it and spare no expense. When you can get a legitimate monster for a couple hundred thousand you'd be insane not to.

If not us some team better have a GM who isn't that dumb. Who cares what he did in the past. Obviously he'll have to pass a piss test now. If he can, screw it. 100 years people. I'd sign Stalin up if he might give me 30+ homers in a half season and change.

Please, put down the kool aid and back away slowly.

Kool-Aid? You're telling me you don't think that Barry Bonds bat could be useful to a major league team?

Again, we are talking about Barry freaking Bonds for the major league minimum. I'd advocate (especially with Edmonds starting to cool and probably in need of more rest) putting him in left field, Soriano in right, and Fukudome in center. Soriano could handle right, and Fukudome is an excellent enough fielder to make up for Barry's lack of range. But he'd sign for the minimum. This could be as little as upgrading from Daryl Ward to Barry freaking Bonds for your go to pinch hitter.

Collusion and nothing less. He put up a 1.000 OPS last year. .480 on base percentage. Obviously there might be a little rust. You may only get a .250/.400/.500 line out of him. Um, sign me up please still. Especially for next to nothing. He's only a spectacle because the media won't let it drop. Their job is to generate traffic or sell papers. But in the grand context of things he's a guy facing a perjury charge in a trial that won't happen until next spring training. Not our problem, we have every right to sign any available player who could help us.

If I can come to grips with Jim Edmonds potentially being on the World Series winning Cubs team, I can come to grips with anyone. How the hell did so many of us become so high and mighty? We are talking about signing someone to play professional baseball. Not like we're talking about making a convict President. Though our President should be a convict. But that's another thread. :D

We'll see if he's still unemployed on 1 September. You have to be on a roster to be eligible for the postseason on 31 August. If there's still no interest on the last day of August, then they can start saying that. Bonds has alot of baggage, no one's going to pick it up until the very last minute.

Seconded, not to mention, such a move could be face saving for Bonds, in addition to giving him a chance at a WS ring - that's all that's left for him to accomplish - collusion be damned. I don't want to see the Tampon Bay Rays or any other recent expansion team make to their first (unless it's against the Cubs this year) or another WS before the Cubs.

It wasn't long ago that most Cubs fans wanted an admitted steroid user to play second base for them.

I'm just one opinion, but it's one thing to admit you did steroids and apologize and another to deny it even though everyone knows you're lying.

Roberts had his best season at age 27, which coincides with a lot of other players' best seasons. That's considered their prime year. Roberts only admitted to trying them once or twice and said he didn't like it and stopped. Did steroids impact his production at all? Hard to say, but he's having a pretty good year this year.

True, there is a difference. But I think the issue is that some people are saying they don't want Bonds because he cheated, and that would somehow stain the team. People don't want Bonds because he's Bonds. Plenty of people have cheated and many of the same people would have no problem with them.

No argument from me. Bonds comes with all kinds of excess baggage that no one wants to deal with. It's not the slightest bit shocking to me that most, if not all, teams aren't interested.

Posted

Excess baggage if you let it matter, in my opinion. in your brief negotiations, make the conditions for his signing clear. No crew, no press conferences, low-keyness important. Of course there will be a circus on Day 1. Day 2 maybe. But if he just shows up, puts on a uniform, and plays a game and then goes home...the circus isn't really his fault. Just like nothing can keep the vultures from running idiotic crap like "OMG A-Rod's Marriage Is Failing" into the ground nothing can keep them from running Bonds return into the ground. Are we to pass up every chance to improve our team because morons can't help themselves?

We're talking a couple hundred thousand dollars here. If he walks in and fails a drug test or goes all prima donna on our asses...release him. No big loss.

It would be just our luck to pass only for some AL team to sign him up and beat our heads in World Series time. Can we maybe have the near free offense instead, so at least we can stash one whammy safely on the bench and not at DH against us in Game 7...
