I didn't question the Murton move, it was the right one. The closer dominates lefties and Edmonds sucks vs lefties. It was the best hope to make something happen, and at the very least Murton nearly drew a walk.

I also think Murton just missed hitting a home run by a a fraction of a few inches of bat meeting ball.

I was happy we nearly took the game, but Blanco should NEVER bat in a tight situation. No excuse for that ever.

I know, I was listening to the radio and when I heard Pat say "Blanco will be pinch hitting" I was like.......crap, game over man.

I assume that was a last second change in plans by Lou. Henry doesn't have strong splits against lefties, and he really never has. I think he saw 3 righties get on base and 1 lefty look foolish so he made the move. If Kosuke's at bat went a little different, I bet Patterson gets a chance to make a play.

The Cedeno AB was the bad one. He has to put the ball in play there. Instead, he looked completely over matched and showed no patience whatsoever.

Putting the ball in play isn't the goal there. Brenly was begging for him to strikeout to limit the damage. I think he went up with a swing hard in case you hit it attitude. But his eye was horrible. A groundout would be even worse than the K, and the only fly ball that scores a run is a very deep one with pudgey on third.

Had he not swung at all he would have been better off.

If Markakis wasn't in RF, a decently hit fly ball scores the run and potentially gets the runner to third (DeRosa) with 1 out.

Probably not now that I think about it, because the Orioles would probably concede the run in order to ensure the tying run doesn't get to third.

That's exactly how I took it too.

The last 3 years Blanco has been healthy (I don't count last year for his stats..he was pretty clearly not healthy both offensively and defensively at the beginning of the year, and then he was on the disabled list most of the year) against left-handers he has put up OPS's of .715, .749, .870, and this year had a .697 prior to last night.

Could Patterson put up those type of numbers against left-handers? Maybe. He almost certainly could match Blanco's OBP against left-handers. But then when you add in Sherill's splits, Blanco becomes a little bit of a better option. As soon as the bases were loaded, I looked at the lineup and realized that it likely had to be Cedeno, Fukudome, Blanco. Whichever choice was made though, it was going to be picking between bad options.

Don't know why everyone is giving Marshall a free pass. 4.2 IP and 4ER, is worse than we expect from Marquis. Its hard for a team to stay in the ballgame when your pitcher is almost giving up a run for every inning pitched.

I don't think people were giving him a free pass, rather, they were discussing the decisions made late in the game. It wasn't a good outing.

This can be said about hundreds of at bats over the course of a season and is an utterly meaningless statement.

The loss last night doesn't worry me in the least. The best team in baseball is still going to lose 50+ games. At least we didn't lay down and die.

I was pretty much thinking the same thing.

I never like to see a hot hitter removed from the game for a guy that's a backup outfielder, at best. I wasn't pleased with Murton over Edmonds at all. And then Blanco at the end? Everyone knew how that was going to end. I haven't been too critical of Lou this year, but he managed the game pretty poorly last night.

Smellz yes.

I really thought we were going to tie the game up in the ninth. However cedeno swinging at everything and fukudome looking lost at the plate quickly turned that around. We won 14 in a row at home, lets start another streak tonight!
