Derek Jeter was voted the most overrated player in baseball in a Sports Illustrated poll of over 495 major leaguers.

 

Zito, A-Rod (huh?), JD Drew, and Youkilis rounded out the top five.

Judging from the list though, it seems like sour grapes. With the exception of Youkilis, they are all overpaid players who are currently (or probably at the time of the poll) getting outproduced by a lot of other underpaid players.

If that's the case, then Zito should be number one, and I don't understand the others. There are others who didn't make the vote that are being paid over $10 million to be absolutely horrible, while the other guys are making $15-20 to be relatively somewhat better than average or better. Derek Jeter is not overrated. Overhyped yeah, overrated, and overpaid, yes. He has been generally one of the better players for the past decade. For his nationally recognize name, he has been very productive in his career. So again, I don't think Jeter is overrated. (But ESPN can stop Elton Johning him, tho).

If you speak with enough Yankee fans, you come to the conclusion that he's over-rated. Many of them believe he has been the best shortstop in the game for a decade now.

That's because he's still a good player and is regarded as a leader and a good clubhouse guy who set examples for others. Sure, we don't really care about that crap, but players probably think it's important. You can be overrated and still be a very good player. The reason Jeter is overrated is because people think he's one of the best to put on a uniform when he's actually the second-best SS on his own team.
