Does anyone else find it odd that athletes from all over the world can train in the US right next to American athletes and then compete for another country?

they can train over here but I don't think we should be handing out scholarships to swim and run over here.

It's not like the schools don't get anything out of handing out a scholarship to a great non-U.S. national student-athlete.

Had a coupe shot putters that were D1 caliber. Their heart was to stay in N.Arizona and go to N.A.U

The coach there recruited two Swedes and a Pol. all lasted two years until the Olympics came around.

A second instance occurred with my 5000 meter specialist who went to Univ. of Tenn and struggled to pay for it while two Kenyan somehow received full rides. I believe they should have the freedom to go here but they soon dropped out once they had built enough money up in road-racing circuit.

I also believe w should firsts watch out for our own before handing money out to foreign students

No, why would it be?

How can you represent another country if you don't live there?

Because that country doesn't have professional services that will make them the money they are now making.

So you are saying the NBA should field a team against a team from a league in Greece,Spain, etc?

If I live in England for work does that change who I am?

I am not talking about professional athletes. That I understand. Having a regular job working in England is one thing. Representing your country but being away from it for the last four years training in your competitor's country is another.

Heaven forbid coaches give out scholarships to athletes who give their school the best chance to succeed.

It's on the coaches to determine the intent and future of any player they are recruiting. This isn't a track and field thing matter only, men's basketball coaches have to determine when their players will turn pro and baseball coaches have to determine which players will actually show up to their school.

I don't see how this is any different than people who think we should take care of thing like New Orleans before handing out foriegn aid. But I suppose its more fun to join McCarthy's anti-bigotry brigade and pile on hcc since apparently that needs to happen in every thread.

Let's see, tax supported State colleges ad universities. I would expect them to recruit as many in state kids for football, basketball or any other sport as possible, and then after that outside the state, then minimum slots for people outside the country.

My kids/students eventually stayed four years at the respective college, struggled through financially, and did very well in the NCAA meets.

someday if your child or student you may coach is in the same situation you may understand.

Wrong

It may be the wrong way of doing things, but it's how they do it. When I was at DePaul, our university president was famous for writing a book called "How to run a university like a business". It's how things are done. It's why they underfund programs that don't bring any money into the university. It's why they hire "professors" who have zero teaching skills but make a lot of money publishing. It's just how it works. Like any other less than ideal situation, you have to work the system to get what you want out of it

The U.S. women's indoor volleyball team eliminated Poland earlier to guarantee themselves the number 2 seed in the medal portion of the tournament.

And the duo of Branagh/Youngs in women's beach volleyball just lost to China. That duo of Americans are now eliminated from Olympic play.

And Xue Cheng (of the Chinese beach volleyball team) is really, really hot.

but universities should not be run like businesses, they should be run like nationalistic, xenophobic factories for the blonde-haired and blue-eyed.
