the Chinese team is emotional because now they know the government won't kill their families

Only after the coaches had to promise that none of the gymnasts would get hurt during their training.

They actually had to make that promise in writing by signing a contract. Nothing like signing a contract promising something that is totally impossible to guarantee.

This is kind of a weird story.

I don't think she's a traitor to her country, and I have no problem with someone playing for a country in which they've lived or even have heritage, but she's not Russian, had never been there, and was basically hired on as a free agent. If the Olympics is going to be about nationalistic pride, there has to be some kind of nationalism involved in the team.

Here's a clip of the last leg of the race. The announcers go from already having conceded first to the French to practically Gus Johnson in a 20 second clip.

that content was deleted. here's the whole race, which i just now got to see. ridiculous.

Haha, yeah, I noticed that too. But, it's nice to see a team so proud to win a medal. The U.S. and China have grown so used to Bronze medals being a defeat that it's refreshing to see a team proud just to stand on the podium.

Lovie Jung on the women's softball team named after a Gilligan's Island character. Wow.
Not if you spelled her name correctly she isn't. Mrs. Howell's first name (actually nickname) is spelled Lovey. You spelled it the way the Bears' head coach spells his first name.

That's how Lovie Jung spells it. Her parents must not have known the actual spelling.

do tell

It has to do with extra inning games.

Starting with the 11th inning, every half inning will begin with runners at first and second. Also, you can start the 11th inning wherever you want in the lineup.

oh, that's a great idea. How about we start with a 1-1 count like in softball too?

It's the baseball equivalent of college FB's rules. Give the offense a handicapped head start, then see which one isn't bad enough to not be able to score. The least horrible offense wins!

Terrible.

If that's how they're going to do baseball then they shouldn't have waited to dump it.

I love the fact that DirecTV has mirrored all of the stations with Olympic coverage onto channels 750-756. Makes channel flipping a lot easier

Only after the coaches had to promise that none of the gymnasts would get hurt during their training.

Al Trautwig said on the air at one point that any Chinese that had TV's on in the country were watching that event...I wondered aloud if that was because the government ordered them to.

Apparently, she was eligible because she is a Russian citizen (gained while she was playing there) and has never represented the U.S. in international play.

I think it's ridiculous, personally.

Wait a second, were's all the hate for the french coming fro mall of the sudden?
The French saying they were going to beat the Americans in the 4x100 relay, and then the world record holder (French) not being able to hold a significant lead in the last 50m.

Yeah, Jim Caple insinuates that the only people who can have a problem with this are people hung up on the Cold War. I think it's really odd that somebody can compete for a country simply because they played some pro ball there. I wouldn't expect any of the Russian women to represent the US in tennis, or Lance Armstrong to ride for the French. It's kind of silly if you ask me. It's one thing to be born in one country, and then move to and become a citizen of another country and represent them. And I also don't think it's the same as coaches working for players/teams from another country.

i say good for her...the us team didn't want her so she took her game to a place that wanted/needed it....what she did is within the rules so i don't see where the problem is.
