wait until we roll out our track team, though. we even got some ringer from kenya this year to run the 1500, i guess.

china will have to wave bye-bye to that gold lead.

phelps alone could over take that lead.

Justin Horton, silly 'how we roll' comments aside, might be my favorite human male athlete of these Games (Phelps isn't human). He just flat-out kicked ass tonight and had a blast doing it.

China is just light-years better than everybody else, though. Jebus.

When's steeple chase?

not sure, but i like it.

I worked my first ever track meet earlier this year and Steeple Chase was one of the events. It's perhaps the stupidest, most bizarre event ever.

Equestrian for people.

Lovie Jung on the women's softball team named after a Gilligan's Island character. Wow.
Not if you spelled her name correctly she isn't. Mrs. Howell's first name (actually nickname) is spelled Lovey. You spelled it the way the Bears' head coach spells his first name.

Sorry... most golds

Not sure where he ranks in most medals.

Yeah. Phelps tied the record tonight for most gold medals by any athlete in the Olympics (both Summer and Winter) which, barring injury, he's probably going to break tomorrow.

The record for most medals is held by Larissa Latynina with 18. Phelps currently has 11 and as long as he doesn't DQ or get injured, will finish with 16 when the Beijing Olympics are done. He's already said he's going to swim in London, though not a full program like this year, but he should be able to get the three medals necessary to get the record for most in history. But even if he doesn't get that mark, he's going to end up with at least three more golds than anyone in history. There's no doubt in my mind he'll be known as one of the greatest Olympians ever, if not the greatest.

Here's a clip of the last leg of the race. The announcers go from already having conceded first to the French to practically Gus Johnson in a 20 second clip.

that content was deleted. here's the whole race, which i just now got to see. ridiculous.

All I've wanted to do since last night is find a copy of the video so I can save it on my computer. NBCOlympics.com won't let me watch it because my Mac isn't an Intel Mac. Apparently non-Intel Macs are not capable of watching videos, according to NBC. If anyone has it on their computer and wants to sendspace it or email it to me, I'd be forever grateful.

LeBron just had a sick block/spike vs. Angola. He came out of nowhere and absolutely destroyed the ball.

Margaret Hoelzer and I both swam for Fran Norris at Space City Swim around 12 years ago. She had the 6th fastest 100m backstroke time in the semifinals and will be competing for a medal tonight in the finals of that event. Also of note, she's the world record holder in the 200m backstroke and prelims for that event begin on Thursday I believe.

so why aren't YOU swimming in the olympics?

 I wasn't nearly as talented. Her 100m backstroke time last night is comparable to my best 100m freestyle time from back in the day if that gives you an idea....Anyway, she won bronze last night, and she's the favorite to win the gold in the 200m back later in the week.

that is why I did it in college. It was always the first event in the morning and after youdid it you were done for the day because it was so exhausting, then as steeplechasers we just sat in the water jump all day enjoying the meet.

Most embarrassing moment though was when I fell into the water jump on the first lap and had 7 to laps to go soaking wet

the Chinese team is emotional because now they know the government won't kill their families

Only after the coaches had to promise that none of the gymnasts would get hurt during their training.

in the segment on mark spitz and how he feels like he's being disrespected after not getting an invite to beijing, the new female sportscenter anchor reffered to him as "mike spitz".

Ow, that hurt. I remember my sister had that poster of him and his 7 gold medals.
