ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano will have his broken left hand re-examined Friday and hopes to return before the All-Star break next month.

Soriano was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Jeff Bennett in the second inning of a game on June 11.

"I think I'll have a better idea on Friday," Soriano said before Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay. "I'm going to see how far I am. I believe that before the All-Star Game I think I'll be able to play."

Soriano is hitting .283 with 15 homers and 40 RBIs in 51 games. He was also sidelined earlier this season with a calf injury.

"He heals quick. He's always been ahead of schedule injury-wise," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We'll have a better idea this weekend."

Soriano will go on a minor league rehab assignment before being activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Also, Matt Murton, recalled from Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, started in left field against the Rays. To make room for Murton, infielder Eric Patterson was optioned to Iowa.

Getting reexamined and may be back before all-star break ... man God sure seems to want to end the curse.

Normally I'd be completely against rushing to come back from injuries, but the nature of his injury (freak injury in a place that is unlikely to be reaggravated) negates that sentiment a bit.

This could be good news. I'm cauitously optimistic.

come back play a couple games before the all-star break then opt to not play in the game and get three or four days rest

what a selfish baby we need a real leadoff hitter like brian roberts not an overpaid selfish whiner that only cares about his own stats and not the team

If Soriano comes back and his wrist is still nagging him, it's gonna be ugly.

his wrist isn't broken.

Additionally, that finger has been proven to have very little impact on a hitter's swing. Once his hand no longer hurts, it shouldn't take much to get him back on track.

I like it....it just shows that he wants to help this team win and not be one of those guys that prolongs the injury as long he can and collect money for not playing.

it would be nice to see him get back untracked too

If he could make the homestand to end the AS break, that would be great. Still, I would be tempted to let him rest til the break. He's not likely to be back any sooner than the Cincy series on July 8 anyway. That would be exactly 4 weeks from the injury.

If he's fully healed, I'd like to see him shake the rust off for a few games down in the minors. He's the kind of guy who comes back from injury and promptly puts up an 0/12 with 6 Ks and a bunch of weak groundouts/pop outs before finally getting back into a groove.

The article says there will be a minor league rehab assignment.

I suppose it would be too soon to expect it to be with the Iowa Cubbies around June 28th - 29th.
