remember when michael dickerson was a very promising pro and then just fell off the face of the earth?

Didn't he get hurt?

back injury, i think

i know he was in camp with someone this year, but he's spent the last few years in india doing religious studies or something nutty

Latest I saw he was trying out with the Cavs. But, I thought that was in '03. According to Wikipedia he hurt his hammys and groin.

Dickerson was dealt to Vancouver in the Steve Francis trade, but the durable guard continued to improve. After playing all 50 games in the strike-shortened season as a rookie, he appeared in all 82 games the next year, again putting up stellar numbers. He averaged 18.2 ppg in 1999-2000, 16.9 ppg in 2000-01.

That’s when Michael Dickerson’s journey took a sudden turn for the worse. The Grizzlies moved from British Columbia the following season and Dickerson suffered a severe sports hernia just five games into their inaugural season in Memphis. He was limited to just 10 games over the next two years.

Unable to heal over the next two-and-a-half years, Dickerson retired before the 2003 season. He finished his abbreviated career with averages of 15.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in just 212 games. Then-Grizzlies coach, Hubie Brown, called Dickerson “a pro’s pro,” adding, “He was mentally and physically tough everyday. Michael had to overcome operations, incredible pain and rehabilitation work on a daily basis.”

His career cut short, Dickerson was left looking for answers. He found them over 8,000 miles away.

“Just after the retirement, there were a lot of unanswered questions,” said the soft-spoken swingman. “I had just signed a contract and I was progressing in my career. And to have my career taken away from me, I was seeking answers. So I started studying different cultures, different environments. And I found more answers in India than I had anywhere else in my entire life.”

Dickerson spent much of the next three years in the subcontinent, studying ancient scriptures and healing his mind and body. Asked what drew him to India to begin with, Dickerson answers unequivocally: “The soul drew me there.”

He hadn’t picked up a basketball, but stayed in shape instead by concentrating on martial arts and yoga training. (“I didn’t want to blow up to 300 pounds,” Dickerson smiled.)

I wouldn't call being religious nutty

yeah but your opinions on most things are pretty irrelevant

Eh if it made him feel better I say more power to him. That had to be hard walking away from the money he would have likely got for his ability.

oh yeah, do what you want. i remember his injury being called "debilitating" and there are worse ways to spend your life than studying in india, it's just not the usual course.

Every kid from Arizona's 2009 freshman class has decommitted. Abdul Gaddy is down to his hometown Washington Huskies and UCLA. This is a big commitment because while Gaddy has one-and-done talent, he's too young to turn pro after his freshman year per current NBA rules so he'd have to play two years of college ball.

Sadly, it sounds like Washington is in the lead.

Oh hell yes:

CHICAGO -- Nationally renowned play-by-play man Gus Johnson will join the Big Ten Network for men’s basketball telecasts this season, network executives announced today, along with former Big Ten stars Kendall Gill of Illinois and Steve Smith of Michigan State.

I've been wondering for years what the Big Ten could do to make their basketball exciting, and there it is.

Well, it is important to remember that there are 5 or 6 different PBP guys that will do games on the BTN this year. Some will mostly do non-con games, but we'll just have to see how Gus fits in.

If I can get at least one Northwestern game with Gus, I'll be happy (cackle included).

Posted

Well, I will be watching more BTN than I originally planned.

We'll have to assign somebody to make sure we know which games Gus will be doing.

No link, this is from someone in the LA media I trust though...Arizona has contacted Steve Lavin's "people' to gauge his interest in the Arizona head coach job (they haven't specifically contacted Lavin).

:D :-))

Are you implying you want Gus to do PBP of you in the shower?

I like Steve Lavin for both his UCLA program destruction and his familiar voice on Big 10 games. I don't want to have to hate him.

Why would you hate him when all he'd do is continue Arizona's destruction?

Despite your odd enjoyment of Steve Lavin the announcer, you're getting GUS JOHNSON for some Big 10 games. Talk about win win here.

It's kinda how I came to love Chip Caray by the time he left. He's a familiar voice that broadcasted a hell of a lot of memorable games for my team.

But yeah, GUS

If not for you saying you liked Gus, I'd be questioning your taste in announcing, memorable games or not.

For the third time in 3 tries, UCLA finishes second in the Abdul Gaddy sweepstakes. I wonder if UCLA ever had a chance. He's going to U-Dub now and probably saved Lorenzo Romar's job past 2010.

Oh well, try to steal away Mike Moser, another of Arizona's decommits. I'm becoming more intrigued with his skill set...he reminds me of a better offensive Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

Doubt this is true, Raisin, but...

A Husky Digest source close to a former Arizona assistant coach has informed us that this coach said that Lute Olson recently called both Abdul Gaddy and Lorenzo Romar to let them know that he thought that Abdul should choose to go to Washington, rather than UCLA.

According to the source Lute said that Washington was a better fit for him and a better program for Abdul’s talents. He went on to say that Romar and Dollar are better qualified and better suited as former PG’s to prepare Abdul for the pro ranks.

He also said that Lute told them that he believes that the system at Washington, with it’s up tempo and wide open brand of basketball is similar to what Arizona ran under him and would be the most natural fit for Abdul.

According to this source Lute told them that he feels that Gaddy would be a perfect back court mate for Isaiah Thomas and he compared it to the chemistry that Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson had together.

Jim Basnight is horrible.

He once posted that Ben Howland peed on Maarty Leunen's lawn when Leunen picked Oregon over UCLA. And that was when he still worked for Rivals.
