M's fans should be parading in the streets. He was a brutal GM who managed to build a team that is high in payroll and low in talent. The contracts to Miguel Batista, Carlos Silva and Jeff Weaver were particularly egregious, and taking on jose Vidro's salary was stupid. The contracts to Johjima and Ichiro will be ugly too.

Brian Sabean and Ned Colletti just lost their primary competition for worst GM in the game.

So what you are basically saying is Richie Sexson is being fairly compensated for the production he provides? :D

sexson was actually good for a year or two of his contract, though he's terrible now. i didn't think it was a bad contract at the time. adrian beltre hasn't earned $13M per year, but he hasn't been too far off that. mostly i'm just saying that the contracts above looked awful when they were signed and turned out to be just that.

Maybe this will make them more likely to deal Bedard. Bavasi might have demanded as much as he gave up out of pride, but pride won't be a factor now. Moving Bedard could be seen as starting to clean up the mess.

A start maybe, but I'm not sure there is an executive alive who can fix that mess.

Bedard, Silva, Sexson, Washburn, Batista and Beltre are all virtually unmovable unless the team eats a whole lot of money.

Bedard is not unmovable. I never understood why the experts were on the Seattle bandwagon.

I always thought the Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin Soo Choo for Eduardo Perez and Ben Broussard trades were idiotic. He traded two of his team's top 10 prospects for both parts of a crappy platoon, and he didn't even do it at once, I think he traded for Broussard first and then, what? He said "Hell, Broussard is useless without Perez, I better go out and get him too!"

People have really eased up on Adrian Beltre but I still think he's blah, even with the way contracts have gone up, he's not a clutch hitter, I don't know why people think a 100+ OPS 3rd baseman at $13 million a year isn't a bad deal. It is.

I just said it could be seen as such. As in, by the fans and such.

Well the guy in charge now is (was) Bavasi's assistant GM.

For all we know he was onboard with the direction Bavasi charted, and the decisions he made along the way.

Really what the guy needs to do first is to determine whether getting back into contention next year is realistic. If he thinks it is, then Bedard won't be available. If he thinks it isn't, then Bedard should be the biggest name out there in a month (assuming Sabathia will not be moved).

"Clutch" isn't a good reason to sign or not sign anyone. If it were, Francisco Cabrera and Scott Brosius (amongst many others) would have made a lot more money than they did. Moreover, how many "clutch" situations do you get on a team that is consistently miserable?

I agree he is slightly overpaid in terms of market value, but the difference between what he earns and what he is worth probably isn't as big as it appears.
