How about having it during the All Star break?

There's not really a time there where it wouldn't take away from the All-Star festivities. With the Futures Game on Sunday, Workout day on Monday, and ASG on Tuesday...there's only Wednesday that it could happen. Also, I doubt MLB would want to put the energy into it then when they are focused on the ASG.

The only option to keep a viable game there is either create an exhibition with minor leaguers or have an old-timers game. Neither is nice as having two major league teams come in and play. But with teams focusing on staying rested and fresh and avoiding injuries in a meaningless game, there's not much else that can be done.

Have it on Wednesday after the All-Star game and give the two teams who participate the day off Thursday for travel before playing Friday.

the only way to keep the game alive is to make it official (i.e., a regular season game). baseball is big business nowadays, and nobody wants to risk their stars getting hurt in an exhibition.

Better yet, have the All-Star game there every year. People will hand over $20 just to look around.

The prices you'd have to charge to go to the game in order to make money would be astronomical.

There's no way to get MLB teams to play their starters in a game that doesn't count, and there's no getting around how damned inconvenient it is for a major league team to travel to a little town out in the middle of nowhere during a long season when they're flying all over the place. The travel conditions are a guarantee the players will continue to hate it, and the injury risk will guarantee no owner will risk the health of marquee players. With those factors in mind, MLB's options are thus 1.) cancel the game 2.) Continue to force an awkward exhibition game to be played in the middle of the season that nobody outside of Cooperstown NY cares about. 3.)Alter the dimensions of the field such that it's reasonable to play a regulation game. 4.) Replace MLB players with minor leaguers or retired players.

Option 2 is basically the status quo that nobody's happy with. Option 3 would be nice but for the fact the whole point of the field is that it's supposedly part of baseball history (whether baseball was "invented" there is open to historical debate), and altering it would be to make the park historically inaccurate. If MLB were willing to do that, and put an off day either before or after the game for both teams, then you could continue the game. If you go with Option 4, the game loses a lot of what little fan appeal it had in the first place. Baseball opted to just put an end to it, and given their choices, it was the right call.

Interesing that both the final Hall of Fame game and the final college all-star football game (where a college all-star team played the NFL champions at Soldier Field) had their last games cancelled because of rain.

"I've always thought that Mother Nature should be the only thing to cancel a Hall of Fame Game, and today that proved to be true," said savethefamegame.com creator Kristian Connolly.

Talk about spin.
