I like productive players. I didn't think Edmonds would be productive, so I hated the idea of adding him. He's been productive, therefore, he has earned my respect.

I would also like to think my own dislike of the signing was more related to pessimistic expectations . . . and I now feel it truly was, since I really am okay with it at this point. I'd like it if he could walk a bit more, but he isn't hurting the time, like Ifeared he would.

Um, I had no problem rooting for him and I have been since the day he put on that uniform. As long as a guy genuinely wants to play for the Cubs I welcome him as a fan no matter what things he's said in the past.

He and Johnson make up the classic platoon. When used correctly, we can expect an .850 OPS from them.

Pie is still the future, and I'm hoping these guys move on after this year. But they are producing now and hopefully get this team into the playoffs this year, so I'm happy.

Right.

That said, he's more valuable now than he was before Soriano's hand broke.

Johnson has another arbitration year left.

Given the contribution he's made, I expect he'll be tendered, and will be staying around for '09.

Edmonds has a .400 OBP and a 1.011 OPS for the month of June. He and DeRosa have been carrying us as everyone else on the roster is a cooling/off slumping a bit compared to May.

To add on, since May 30th, he's 18 for 44 (.409) with 6 2Bs, 1 3B, 2 HR, and 14 RBI. I don't know how anyone who could root against a player on their own team, especially while that player is performing so much better than the previous player.

In comparison, since May 30th, DLee is 14 for 58 (.241) with 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, and 7 RBI, although his cold slump has been widely noted.

Three years of declining numbers are still a lot better predictor of what a player is likely to do than 68 ABs over less than a month. If he's still putting up an .800+ OPS at the end of July, then I'll have more confidence he still can produce. I am going to take a bit more convincing, but Lou's instincts on Dempster and Theriot seem to have been right so far this season, and a lot of people thought that relying on these guys to be major contributers was pure looney. It's too soon to accept him, but I can't really complain too loudly at this point.

It's a difficult argument to make because of two factors: injury during 2006 and 2007, and full time play. I don't know that anyone get accurately measure the impact on his numbers of his injury laden seasons playing full-time versus a fully healthy, part-time maximized split.

His age should dictate decline, no question. The real question is can you off-set age decline with part-time play and ideal hitting circumstances to yield .800+ OPS? With Edmonds I think so, as .800 OPS would still be .100 below his career average, still a marked decline.

My feelings haven't changed. Edmonds was among the most hated members of the most hated team.

What was it '03 where the Cards and Astros were constantly in beanball wars with the Cubs? Ausmus, Ozwalt, Edmonds, Carpenter. These names mean "enemy" to me.

I continue to hope the Cubs win despite Edmonds going o-fer.

Edmonds iritated me because he was freaking good and one hard out. I don't remember him pissing me off other than that.

His being good never bothered me in the least (See Pujols, Rolen, etc)

His apparent need for the "flash" is what irritated me. I fully accept him on the Cubs, but he still has the need, and it still irritates me.

We haven't yet seen a cold day in hell, so I still dislike Edmonds.

Let me be clear - I'm thrilled that he is performing and will continue to cheer for him to do so. That doesn't mean I have to like him or accept him, though.

So, bascially the same stance you took toward Moises?

I'm going to bump this thread in August when he'll be hitting low .200's with no walks or power and he'll still be languishing on our roster

In a perfect world Edmonds would go on a tear and help us to the World Series. He'd then leave via free agency and sign a fresh 3 year deal with the Cardinals. Then he'd go back to sucking.

Sooo, what would happen if Jimmy lights up wrigley field with 22 homers/300avg and helps win the WS, do we sign him for next year???

If you want to make the same mistake Ed Lynch did in 1998, sure.

Millions of Cub fans are going to be shocked to learn that the Cubs won the WS in 1998.
