Cashner's season stats:

9-4, 9 saves, 2.32 ERA, 54.1 IP, 80K, 27 BB, .122 opp .avg., 7 wild pitches, 8 HBP.

Nuke Laloosh, in other words.

All this means is now Detroit and Arizona get better getting better players cause we continue to screw up our drafts.

I think the Detroit Free Press was suggesting the Tigers would take Cashner at 21.

What a terrible pick

It's not a terrible pick, but it's not one I would have made in the 1st rd.

With that said, it's disconcerning to me that the Cubs will bounced between drafting "high upside" athletes, and "high upside" arms with control problems. I thought Friedrichs would have been a better pick, to be honest.

Yeah, but now they will get Melliville or the Illinois kid. They didn't think they would still be there.

is this a case of wilken outthinking himself and trying to find a diamond in the rough in the first round?

He was expected to go top 20, he's no a diamond in the rough.

Given the Mariner pick of Fields at #20, it's pretty clear that they would have taken Cashner if we hadn't.

Okay, Friedrich, Hunt, Collier, Melville, Kelly, Gillaspie, Odorizzi, and Havens would all make good picks at 41. Any chance one of them makes it there?

Was thinking the same thing.

Gillaspie would be the most likely. Collier after that. I don't see Melville getting past the Yankees. Friedrich and Hunt are first rounders, a few teams really like Havens in the first round and the Rockies love Jake O.

better than trading hill and pie for john grabow at the trading deadline, i suppose.

Or Garland for Karchner.

Thanks, Bruce.

Wilken said Cashner has put on 15-20 pounds from last year and that the Cubs would let time determine wither Cashner remains a reliever or goes to the bullpen in the minor leagues.

Do you mean remains a reliever or starts in the minors?

Add Cole to that list of possibilities for 41, forgot about him. Hopefully Melville and Kelly go soon, I'm not sure we'd pay them their demands in the Sandwich round.

I think 1 of Cole or Melville can and will make it.

If he's 6-5 180, he needs at least another 15-20! :D
