It is just so hard to imagine all the dollars that Dusty cost him! Honestly I feel for him. Pavano is a completely different story!

yeah pavano got a big (stupid) contract before completely breaking down.

Hendry absolutley made the right decision in letting him go.

But what about his potential, etc, etc?

It was a claear decision then, and is now. I understand the emotional attachment to the guy, and if he would have taken an extra year to come back like Hendry wanted that would have been fine too. It was time though, take the emotion away from it and it was a very easy decision.

That's frustrating to see, but I'm glad he's not our problem anymore.

That's how I feel as well. I wish Mark the best.

He's this generation's Mark (The Bird) Fidrych. :(

Outstanding comparison. He had ridiculous potential just like Prior.

And just like Prior, his rookie season made it look like he'd actually live up to that potential. I'm fairly sure Fidrych won Rookie of the Year, and Prior almost certainly would have in 2003 if he had qualified.

I agree. I was being sarcastic about the hand wringing and outrage that went on when he was let go/wanted to go. He'll never return to his pre Dusty-abuse form, unfortunately.

Can't say I'm surprised in the least. His career seems to be over. This is his 2nd shoulder surgery in as many years, right?

First I have to admit that I wanted the Cubs to sign Prior in the offseason. I was pretty upset that we let a pitcher go with that amount of potential, but this one Hendry got right. It was time to let him go.

Second, the comparision between Fidych and Prior I think is accurate if you are talking about the effect that it had on their teams. However, Prior was a much better pitcher than Fidych showed. Prior's 2003 was an amazing season, much less for a pitcher's first full year in the majors. Prior's K:BB ratio was over 9:1 that year. The Bird didn't even manage a 2:1 ration in his one full year. Both were star pitchers, but Prior had a chance to be real special that is frustrating to think about at this point.
