In front office circles, the consensus is that Lofton would already be with a club if he had been a little less choosy. He just might resurface yet. Jake Peavy recently made a pitch for the Padres to sign him, and if Jim Edmonds continues to flounder with the Cubs, Lofton could be the next left-handed-hitting center fielder du jour in Chicago.

And he should leadoff, but won't.

I have always been a big Lofton fan, and I think he, unlike Edmonds, has something left in the tank.

Sounds more like an idea than a rumor at this stage, but BP added:

Elsewhere in the outfield, Jim Edmonds' slow start (3-for-24) tries Lou Piniella's patience, which should serve as a reminder that Kenny Lofton remains a phone call away.

it would be redundant...but if pie is going to pass the time away in the minors...i would rather have lofton instead of edmonds

although...i would be wary of the price tag...

i think if center field continues to be an issue we may see a trade for coco at the deadline...

it is games like today that get me thinking about all the problems on this club

oh well

Lofton hit .296 last year with a .367 OBP. I'm fine with Lofton for a couple of months.

if you're going to visit the bargain bin, lofton makes a hell of a lot more sense than edmonds. lofton could probably put up a .350 OBP, which isn't great, but it's sure better than - as BP might have put it - the "charred remains of jim edmonds."

lofton is a pretty bad fielder at this point, though.

good for him, bad for us
Good for us if today was the start of a trend for Edmonds rather than the proverbial blind squirrel finding the nut. I'm not holding my breath for that to happen.

So is anyone really surprised to here this at all? They've realized Edmonds is done and now realize they've destroyed any chance Pie had to be productive this season by benching him then sending him to Iowa. Lofton has a better chance of being good offensively than Edmonds (that's like saying you have a better shot at surviving in a ship wreck vs. a plain crash but oh well). Lofton's defense, however, won't be as good. If they are seriously giving thought to Lofton, then they had better give some serious thought to some other unconventional solutions such as playing Cedeno in CF or moving Fukudome and trading for a RF. Seattle managed to convince Ichiro to move to CF. I'll bet the Cubs could convince Kosuke to at least try it out.

Like vance, I'm hoping for Milton Bradley. He won't light the world on fire but he won't stink up the joint either. Whatever the end solution is, I hope it's neither Jim Edmonds nor Kenny Lofton.

Milton Bradley can't be counted on to stay healthy for more than 90-100 games. Stay far away.

Lofton would be a spectacular platoon partner for Johnson assuming we're not going to give Felix Pie a chance.

good idea since they don't even play their next game until tomorrow.

At this point in the season, I'd rather have Edmonds' defense over Lofton's offense, especially since KL wouldn't bat leadoff. Although I do think Lofton could be valuable in the 8 spot.

The Cubs have faced a lot of lefties lately, so JE hasn't had a stretch of games to find his swing. As long as the Cubs keep winning and the offense is scoring runs, I'll stick with JE. Near the All-Star break, if JE is still sucking, or if him in the lineup is costing the Cubs games, then I'd make a move.

Lofton is available now, I see no reason why he won't be available in a few weeks to month or so.

Lofton can't really play CF anymore. Though, he'd probably be alright at Wrigley, being that it's a small OF and Kosuke covers a lot of ground in the RCF gap.

Edmonds just HRed and now has 2 hits today, so this is probably now a moot point.

If this was an inside joke or something else that went over my head, forgive me.

No, it's moo point. Duh. Like a cow's opinion. It doesn't matter.
