Before today's Iowa game, Rich Hill (back spasms) is expected to be activated from the Iowa DL. LHP Chris Shaver has already been sent to AA Tennessee.

RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (tricep tendonitis) was activated off Peoria's DL and RHP Kevin Kreier returned to extended spring training.

Meh, Peoria's game was postponed.

Ugh. Doubleheader tomorrow with Rhee and Cabrera.

Tony Thomas continues his red hot hitting with a solor HR in the 3rd inning. Daytona up 1-0 in the 4th.

Rich Hill's first:

2 walks, 2 strikeouts looking, and a long flyout to center.

22 pitches-12 strikes, 10 balls. 5 were swung at. 3 fouls, 1 strike swinging, 1 put into play.

And his second-1 walk, 2 strikeouts, and a flyout.

41 pitches through 2. 24 strikes, 17 balls.

His 3rd had better control, but worse results. 2 singles and a 3 run homer to go along with 1 fly out, 1 groundout, and 1 strikeout.

66 pitches through 3. 42 strikes, 24 balls. His line: 3 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

And that ends up being his final line of the night.

Well, at least he threw more strikes overall. He was going to be a few starts away regardless.

66 pitches...that's how many he threw on the side last Sunday. Hope he turns it on next time to force the Cubs' hand because the Marquis era needs to end as soon as possible.

Atkins is really holding his own at AA this year after being pretty horrid there last season. Gave up 3 in 7 today but struck out 8 and walked only 1.

Tony Thomas is on fire, 3/5 with a double and a homer. YUSUF hit 2 solo HRs too. Adam Harben continues to struggle.

I don't think one start, no matter how successful it is, will convince the Cubs to pull him up. He'll need 2-3 starts with pretty effective results and decent to good control strung together.

And unless Marquis starts raising that ERA significantly over 5, I doubt the Marquis era will end when Hill comes back.

Pie's 2 of 5 with a triple and a homerun. He did pop up a bunt for an out, so unfortunately I can see the coaching staff not being too happy with that. I'm just glad to see him getting hot again.

How did Ascanio get a save being up by 7 runs?

When he entered the game in the 8th, it was only a 3 run game, so he gets the save.

Ascanio was very wild tonight but effective.

2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K

Well I'm assuming since he pitched 2 innings, he pitched the 8th and 9th. The score was 6-3 when they started the 8th. I think that still qualifies as a save.

As much as I've enjoyed following Mitch Atkins over the past few seasons, he's really got to do something about those HRs given up. If he had them at a reasonable number, most people around here would be clamoring to see him in the majors.

well, i wasted my time going to the i-cubs game last night. due to the long line at the ticket counter, i didn't get in until the third inning, so i didn't get to see much hill. he should have been out of the third 1-2-3, but blanco misplayed the first of what ended up being three hits. the next hit was solid and the hr was barely fair down the rf line. i couldn't believe it got out.

the radar gun is completely unreliable, so i can't tell you how hard he was throwing. i was listening to the game on the radio on the way in, and the announcer said that hill has added a split finger. seems like a strange thing to do when you're down there because you can't throw your fb for strikes.

he looked really pissed off and just overall unhappy. he batted in the bottom of the 3rd, though he didn't come out for the 4th, and he half-ass tried to drag bunt three times before striking out. it was kind of amusing.

Hill's always looked pissed off and unhappy on the mound. I wish he'd throw strikes again, if he was pitching anywhere near his '07 or second half '06 levels, he'd be a great #2-3 and would be as good as anyone we can get at the deadline.

Hendry was at the I-Cubs game.

Des Moines Register[/url]"]"We're an easy read - if you come down to Iowa and do well and get after it the right way, your turn's going to come," he said before Friday night's Iowa Cubs-Memphis game at Principal Park. It worked most recently with Micah Hoffpauir. It could work sometime for Rich Hill, Iowa's starting pitcher during Friday's 10-3 win against Memphis before an announced crowd of 10,377 at Principal Park.

"He's one of the reasons I'm here," Hendry said regarding the pitcher removed Friday from the disabled list. "I want to see where he's at, compared to where he was."

It could work for Felix Pie, who tripled and clobbered a three-run homer. "Felix is getting his feet back on the ground," Hendry said.

In three innings Friday, Hill allowed three hits, including a three-run homer, while striking out five and walking three after recovering from back spasms. "It's not a come in and throw good and you're going to Chicago type of deal," Hendry said. "You earn your way back."

Hill figured to be one of the Chicago Cubs' solid starters before running into control difficulty. "I feel like I'm throwing the ball as well as I have in a long time," Hill said. "It's been a couple weeks since I've been in a game, but I feel good after not being able to get into a rhythm since Day One of spring training."

Hendry watched from the seats behind home plate.
