LHP Rich Hill went on the disabled list on May 17th with back stiffness. Hill pitched a simulated game yesterday [sunday] and if his back checks out in good condition today [Monday], he could return to the mound before the end of this home stand. LHP Sean Marshall went on the disabled list on May 23rd with a strained left hamstring suffered on Thursday night at Omaha. After meeting with the doctor, the strain doesn't appear to be severe and he is hopeful to miss just one to two starts before returning to the rotation.

Brackets added by me.

Good news regarding both of them.

Arizona Phil: EXST Cubs Fall to Angels at Fitch Park:

  • Robert Hernandez is still pitching at Fitch (and pitching well - 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Hopefully he gets to Peoria soon.
  • Michael Bunton threw for the first time in a few months as he works back from shoulder soreness.
  • Josh Vitters still can only field and cannot swing the bat.
  • Chris Huseby threw a simulated game and his control continues to be horrid (6 strikes out of 30 pitches  ). Her has a bullpen session scheduled on Thursday and is supposed to throw in an extended spring training game on Saturday.
  • Angel Guzman (20 pitches), Mark Pawelek (60 pitches), John Muller and Rogelio Carmona threw a simulated game yesterday due to wet fields cancelling a game.

Tennessee scores 6 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to win 8-7 over Carolina.

Colvin went 1-3 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt. As impressive as his walks have been lately, the cutting down of the strikeouts has also been very impressive. Only 2 in his last 10 games now.

Oddly enough, he's on pace to strike out more times this season than last season.

it seems that someone has gotten in colvin's ear and told him that he won't become a decent big league ballplayer without learning some plate discipline... that's an encouraging sign.

I've heard rumors (but no confirmation) that the Cubs have had a change from the top down in the minors in terms of valuing and preaching plate discipline and guys like Cedeño last year and Colvin this year have heeded the advice.

Quick un-Cubs-related question (I didn't want to start a whole new thread just for this):

Does anyone know if the Pirates or Phillies have anyone to look for on their AAA teams? I'm going to a game in Indy next week and I'm just curious if there's anyone I should try to remember.

For Indianapolis: Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, Steven Pearce

For Ottawa: JA Happ and Jason Jaramillo

McCutchen is probably one of the top 20 prospects in baseball right now.

Awesome, thanks.

Hrm...Holliman to the pen.

I get the feeling the Cubs think Howry and Eyre might be gone after this season. They've got a handful of guys in the high minors who can step in for Howry (with Wuertz or a FA presumably taking over the 7th inning role) and a couple of lefties who could take over Eyre's role. They might be able to re-sign either of those two, but, frankly, Howry will be 35 and Eyre will be 36 by season's end. I don't think retaining either would be a bright idea.

Just hope they get favorable FA designations and some team is dumb enough to sign them. :D

I believe the Cubs control him through 2010. He did spend some of 2004 in the majors, but I doubt it was enough for him to be a "super two," so I elieve his arbitration-eligible years would be 2008 through 2010.
