it's funny to see all the irrational, meatball posts.

it's kinda the opposite of when ditka went to new orleans. the meatballs really didn't know what to do, then.

God, stop using that word. It makes you sound so bitter/pathetic.

Well if that isn't the most ironic thing I've read today, I don't know what is.

If the Cardinals had signed Sammy Sosa, half your fanbase would be too.

I'll freely admit I couldn't coax my tongue into shouting "GO EDMONDS!" yet from my perch in the upper deck. It's gonna take some time.

I boo every time Lee comes up to bat because he hit that double against us in game 6 of the NLCS. I don't care what he does for the Cubs, it will be a cold day in Hell before I say anything about that traitor.

Wait a minute, that sounds like kind of a dumb thing to do.

It's just a game. Opposing players aren't terrorists. Geez.

BTW - nice homestand so far.

You just don't get it...this is not a very good analogy as it relates to the current scenario.

lee = good at baseball

edmonds at this stage of his career = bad at baseball

PM me if you need further explanation.

Yeah, I don't get it. Bitter distaste for a guy that had the nerve to play on another team and beat the Cubs. And stopped to watch a homerun. OMG! No Cubs have ever done that (or, for example, shown up opponents by doing a "hop" after every homerun)! I hate him for life and want to boo him and (insert gay joke here)!

All this vitriole has very little to do with him possibly no longer being an effective player.

i think you'd be surprised. most people on this board don't want him on the cubs because he sucks at baseball.

I feel the same way, but while Edmonds is bad, think about this:

1. Pie hasn't been slighted by this. The pooch has been screwed regarding Pie for weeks now. In fact, he may be better off in Iowa, because he sure wasn't getting any AB's here.

2. As woeful as Edmonds OPS was in San Diego, Johnson's has been worse in May, and the two are trending in opposite directions. IMO, Johnson = Edmonds. Neither should be playing in front of Pie, but that point is really moot.

So really, signing Edmonds doesn't make any difference whatsoever, save maybe that he and Reed could make a decent platoon, and it could get Kosuke moved up the order.

All of this hand wringing over Edmonds is just stupid. I don't care for the guy, but some of these people who are acting as if their child's rapist just joined the team need to grow the hell up. What most of us are upset about is that Pie isn't playing. While the Edmonds signing reinforces that, any hope that Felix was going to get his shot this year was false, and deep down we all know that.

Yes, Edmonds sucks. But he doesn't really make the team any worse than it was, and the Cubs aren't paying him squat. Expressing our distaste for Edmonds isn't going to make Hendry or Lou and less dense. Let's move on, it's done.

I actually agree with this, and it's really the biggest reason that I'm frustrated by the signing. The cubs see a veteran who is completely cooked as the possible answer to the "hole" in CF, but can't see that a guy 15 years younger might end up being the more productive player this season. The Cubs seem to understand that it takes a guy some time to adjust and improve at various levels of the minor leagues, but for some reason it has always escaped the grasp of management that a guy isn't going to "figure it out" by going and beating up on pitchers at a level he's already dominated. pie can rake against minor league pitching; what's his incentive to make adjustments when he's hitting .350?

no, the only way for pie to improve at this stage of his career is to get consistent playing time with the major league club. this is painfully obvious to about 80% of this board, which makes the cubs' ignorance in this respect all the more distressing. not every prospect is going to be kerry wood or geovany soto; many guys will learn how to hit or pitch at the big league level, and progress into productive major league players. unfortunately, that will probably happen for another organization.

Edmonds is happy? Not that there's anything wrong with it.

"Solving" one mistake by making another doesn't negate the mistake.

Felix Pie needs to learn how to hit major league pitching. It was always going to be an issue and it's going to remain an issue until he gets a chance to face major league pitching for a prolonged period of time. Going to AAA is not going to help him adjust to major league pitching. All this does is delay the time it will take to see whether or not Pie can make it in the majors.
