I'm holding out hope that he sucked because of the big PetCo park but will be good at a smaller park, I mean that is why people want Greene right?

Good point. I wonder what his adjusted stats are?

Unless you believe his numbers this season indicate a complete collapse of hitting skills, Edmonds will likely be better than Reed Johnson vs. right-handed pitchers.

It's not just this year. He's been mediocre to bad for awhile.

Just curious...the Cubs certainly passed on Posednick (which I'm glad they did, and I was against the Edmonds signing) but ended up signing "Jimmy E." If you had to choose, do you prefer Edmonds over Posednick, or vice versa?

Oh BTW, just saw a feature and interview on Edmonds. Zambrano and "Jimmy E." already have made amends and in general, received a warm reception from the players. Now, if only the fans will give Jim Edmonds a chance. I better not hear any boos today!

if the choice was mine, I'd pick Felix Pie

If he can put up last season's numbers vs. righties in a strict platoon, he's better than Reed Johnson against righties.

Reed Johnson vs. righties is not a particularly high hurdle to leap.

I had a dream last night that they signed both (I'm serious). I woke up screaming

Look, I am pissed that Pie hasn't been given a fair shake in this whole deal, but I think most of you are completely overreacting to this signing. We haven't been getting much productivity out of CF anyway, so this is a low risk deal with a potentially high reward. Now I don't expect much out of Edmonds, but it is worth a shot at this point.

Playing Pie was a low-risk move with a potentially high reward. this is a medium risk (by hurting player development) move with a low potential reward.

Maybe that little part inside of me that just died was my ulcer.

Probably the best answer to the OP yet.

General question....with the Edmonds signing, and Pie being sent down to AAA, does that create an issue with the AAA roster that another player would need to be released or sent down to AA?

Don't ask why i was thinking of this, I just thought i saw that when Hill was sent down to Iowa, Juan Mateo was sent to AA and refused assignment.

that problem won't present itself with Ward heading to the DL, but the answer is yes when he comes back and whomever is sent back down

Things can't really be quantified this way. While I agree that signing Edmonds could be higher risk because of player development issues, I don't think Felix has a drastically higher upside than Edmonds for 2008.

Obviously, if we're looking toward the future it's a different story.

I wasn't able to see the game today. How did the crown react to him?

Heavily positive, with a smattering of boos, especially when he GIDP and struck out in embarrassing fashion with the bases loaded.

Something positive: the plurality of voters on comcastsportsnet's poll think that it was a good signing, he's got a good bat

I know that I booed him unmerciful.

Something positive: a sizable group sitting behind the Cubs dugout gave him a non-ironic standing ovation after he grounded into the double play in 4th. I'm positive they're all idiots.

I'd love to plug into that, but from what I understand the vast majority of Cardinal-dom couldn't care less.

It was such an odd feeling seeing Edmonds in a Cubs uniform. It didn't really bother me too much, but I just can't grasp the face that he's not a Cardinal. We probably won't see him starting the PIT series anyway.

There are a lot of die hards that were on the brink of being physically ill at the thought of their precious "Jimmy Ballgame" in a Cubs uni. A lot of them.

meh whatever, they should be happy that the six best year of his career came in a cardinal uniform (shocking, i know) and now the cubs are going to be wasting a starting spot on a guy who can't play any more.
