After some awful playing by Luis Hernandez, the Orioles have named Freddy Bynum they're starting short stop. Remember him? Yeah, I thought you might. This suggests they're desperate for a short stop.

Would they like Ryan or Ronny? I bet they would. I hate to dig up the Brian Roberts thing for the 9 millionth time, especially when its not our biggest need at this time, but this could be a good time to strike. I propose Ryan or Ronny plus Marshall or Hill for Roberts. Maybe throw in Murton or Hoffpauir and see if we can drag anything else out of them. We all know they like our old garbage:

Patterson

Bynum

I don't know now. I'm pretty happy with Ronny. O's were complete idiots not accepting the deal this winter.

The problem is that if the Cubs trade cedeno or Theriot they have to get a backup SS back in return. So if they can trade Pie as part of a package for Green, then trade Cedeno as part of a package for Roberts.

O's get: Marquis, Cedeno, Patterson+ cash

Padres get: Marshall, Pie, Veal

Cubs get Roberts, Green

Cubs bring Hill back up to replace Marquis

Gallagher/ Lieber provide depth after Dempster's implosion

San Diego's biggest problem right now is offense. Pie certainly doesn't fix that.

Baltimore needs a new owner, GM, manager, etc........

I don't care about them. I'll only start caring about them if they consider selling off players for something less than an entire farm system in return. Until then, we have games to win.

With that big park and his speed, he and Marshall would be really good guys to get for them and if they threw him out there everyday, he might flourish.

one could argue that a SS producing right around a .600 OPS has contributed to this problem

Who cares if Baltimore needs a SS? The Cubs have Theriot and Cedeno, and that's it. The last thing the Cubbies need is another Second Baseman. We need starting pitching.

Your absolutely tight. Cubs dont need a second baseman at all. However, we do need a leadoff hitter, and the most available just happens to be a second baseman, and since our second basemen have been productive, but not irreplaceable, its a good fit.

No, we don't

We have a lead-off hitter in Fukudome. We've just placed him in the wrong spot in the order.

I'd rather focus on fixing the rotation now and look at adding another bat later.

Id love to fix the rotation, however, a solid starter is tough to come by at this point in the season. Joe Blanton is the best possibly available, and Billy Beane isnt in the buisness of giving up something for nothing, so we'd have to pony up some big prospects.

A) Leadoff hitter is not a position

B) The Cubs would be foolish to spend their limited trading pieces on a speedy middle infielder as opposed to addressing real needs, like starting pitching.

I agree but imo to get a quality starting pitcher is going to be a very high cost and I'm not sure the Cubs have enough to outbid the Angels or other teams to get one.

I really agree with both points here. I'm starting to get a little worried about Fook. Still has great numbers, but he isn't really hitting for power and seems to be screwing himself into the ground when swinging. He doesn't look very comfortable.

The second I read Hill's name I stopped reading. This would be plain dumb...your opinions about the Cubs are generally bad.

Hill was one of the 30 best pitchers in baseball last year, let's throw him away for a guy who is basically the same as the guy we already have.

I'm not sure the Orioles erred by not trading Roberts. Come July, the Cubs and the rest of the leagues' contenders will realize they have to pay top dollar to get Roberts or whomever else they want.

The Orioles did quite well in the Bedard and Tejada trades.

Tim Kirchen (sp) still thinks the O's will trade Roberts to the Cubs (May 8th interview on the 105.7, a Baltimore radio station) this summer. I don't see it happening. Cubs likely to have other more pressing needs. We'll see.

And then no one will trade for him.
