I thought it was a very good outing by Sean, all things considered. He hadn't started in nearly 2 weeks, has made 2 relief appearances in the last week, and just found out he was starting probably 2-3 hours before he took the mound. I thought he got in trouble when he was rushing. At times, he needed to slow himself down and pitch. But still, he had an awesome fastball. Threw it anywhere from 91 to one 97. A lot of movement. His curve/slider was inconsistent, but had Augie, Reynolds, Drew, and Young scratching their heads.

You have to figure that at least some of the wildness and the mounting problems in the fifth came from his youth. He's 22 and has barely ever started in the majors (is this his first?), you have to know the adrenaline is pumping and that accounts for at least some of the struggles.

Not excusing the final numbers, but if this is as bad as he'll get, I'm excited for the future.

Yes, this was his first big league start.

Thanks Raisin. I was thinking it was, but wasn't sure at all.

Sean Gallagher will have some good starts and some bad starts in his career.

No amount of moving the goalposts will change the fact that this was a bad one.

Bad result? Yes. But there was some hope to be gleamed from it considering it was his first ML start and he pitched decently. Given he's 22, I'm ok with the start.

By the way, from a few of your posts in the game thread, I suspect you agree with the last part. I thought I'd say it anyway, though.

It wasn't a great day for the Cubs, but Sean's 2008 debut was excellent. Mr. Gallagher, please pass on to Sean my congrats for the outstanding work today. I hope he continues to impress enough to get a shot at the rotation.

First let me start off by thanking everyone for the kind words that have been expressed. All I can say is what a difference a year makes!! All Sean's hard work and dedication looked so much better and especially the "dropping of the weight". It was almost as if you were looking at a different person and his motion looked so much easier. I spoke with Sean after the game and told him that folks over at "NSBB" were wishing him the best. He's looking forward to doing whatever the team asks of him at this point. I must say that his velocity was great but especially the movement he had on his 2 seamer. It was a proud night at the gallagher household but Sean knows he still has work to do and hopefully he can continue to impress.

here's to hoping you have to change your screen name to something like your sig soon.

Um, context? Sean hasn't started a game in like 2 weeks. He was money through 4, that's all you should really expect in that situation.

i heard somewhere that gallagher gets another start on friday, anyone confirm that??

According to cubs.com, it is in fact true.

With Zambrano now starting Monday against San Diego, Piniella said the 22-year-old Gallagher is likely to remain in the rotation and start Friday against Pittsburgh. That means Jon Lieber is probably the odd man out and will return to the bullpen.

I'd prefer Marquis to be out as I think Lieber would be better in the rotation, but good to see Gallagher getting another chance.

Considering his first MLB start was against arguably the best team in baseball at the last minute, I think that's a pretty damn promising debut for him. Congrats to SG and his family!

A 22 year old making a last minute start as his first major league start against the #2 run scoring team in the league, that hasn't started in a couple weeks should do better than that. Sure, his last 2 earned runs were walked in by Chad Fox, but still. There's absolutely no excuse for him not to get a complete game shut out.

Personally, I blame Lou. Not sure why, but I might as well.

Hello everybody, just wanted to add that I thought Sean did a good job today considering the circumstances of getting the nod an hour before game time. I was getting ready to head out to take care of a few errands until I got a call from Sean's agent telling me the good news. You could see in the first inning that he was pumped up and as I have told him since "little league" that walks kill you. I didn't know where that ball was going in the first inning as it started towards center and ended up in right center. I would have to say that with all things considered and some folks are going to say that this wasn't a good outing but I have to disagree. Sean has been used primarily out of the pen and thats hard on somebody who has been a starter his entire career. I heard Len mention that during the broadcast that in the 15 innings he has come out of the pen he has struck out seven. In todays game alone he struck out six in four innings and in the 5th you could tell he was running out of gas as he was leaving pitches up and missing spots.

I had a brief chat with Sean after the game as he was "big leagueing" me with all the phone calls he was getting. The first thing he said to me was that it was great that the Cubs won!!! He also said that he was nervous the entire first inning and didn't settle down until the second. Sean said that he made mistakes with some pitches and that he was overall pleased with his outing. If true that Sean will get another shot I see him being more comfortable as he will throw a bullpen before his next start and hopefully Dad will be there to watch......... :yahoo:

Thanks for the behind the scenes stuff, pc! We're all pulling for Sean!

Agreed completely. It's quite cool to see the workings of a parent with a son breaking into the big leagues.

Congrats to both of you. I'd love nothing more than for him to do so well, he forces his way into the rotation for good.

Well, I might love a Cubs World Series victory more, but that's an awful lot to ask for. :bye:

Don't worry, the people that say it was a bad outing don't know much about baseball. It wasn't mind blowing, but I was really impressed. I'd have to guess that he'll only get better. Congratulations!

Congrats, Mr. Gallagher. You must be proud. He looked good before tiring. His stuff has looked improved from last season, it's remarkable how much Sean's stuff has improved throughout his minor league career. I do hope he gets another chance, he's definitely a better option than a few other guys currently in the rotation.

First major league start of his career, with little notice, against the team with the best record in baseball, he pitches a shutout through 4 innings, and that's a BAD start? What planet are you from?

he gave up a run in the first.

it wasn't a terrible start, but it wasn't really a good one. he showed some good things though and i'm glad he's sticking in the rotation.

Given the circumstances, I'd consider it a good start. The overall results look bad, but that's more indicative of the situation than of the way Sean pitched. He looked real sharp out there in innings 2-4. Like Mr. Gallagher said, he was nervous in the first (I'm pretty sure I'd be a little nervous too in my first ever ML start) and calmed down in the 2nd. He pitched great in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings and it was apparent he lost gas in the 5th. As many people have stated this is almost exclusively due to being in the BP the past 2 weeks, not throwing much since being called up, and learning that he was getting the start only an hour or two before he had to get on the bump. I was very impressed with what he was able to do through 4 against one of the best offenses in the league. All that said, I wouldn't get too excited about the amount of Ks. It was nice to see, but it was against the D-Backs, who have a lot of hitters that strike out a lot. In fact, I'm pretty sure I can strike out Mark Reynolds. Everything considered, it was a very encouraging start and I'm excited to see his start on Friday. I hope he pitches well and can stick in the rotation as the 5th starter. Congrats to Sean, Mr. Gallagher, and the rest of his family. They should be very proud of their son, and it sounds like he's a good kid.

As others have stated, we all really appreciate you sharing your experiences, Mr. Gallagher. It's really cool to see the stuff behind the scenes and hear Sean's true reactions to the game. He should be proud of himself.

In that case he did a good job. Lou must have seen some things he liked, hence the second start on friday; the logic behind that is probably along the "let's see what this kid can do when he can prepare normally".

So a big opportunity coming up for Sean next friday. I'll be rooting for him to have an exceptional start.

Okay maybe I missed somethin but when you said "Mr. Gallagher, please pass on to Sean my congrats for the outstanding work today." What was that all about? Was it a typo or was that directed towards Sean Gallagher's father? Or maybe Sean G. has a split personality that we're just finding out about. Anyway, that part of your post didn't make any sense.

It was directed toward his father. His father is a member here and posted earlier in this thread under the handle peoriachiefs39.

I know this might seem shocking to you, but Sean's dad's last name also happens to be Gallagher. ;)

I can't imagine how awesome it would be to see your son make his first major league start. Congrats to the both of you! Hopefully Sean stays in the rotation for years to come.

I'm in the camp that thinks it was not a good start, but that doesn't matter. Despite not being a great start (last minute conditions notwithstanding), he showed he's got the arm and the "stuff" to succeed at this level. This start only reinforced my excitement for him in the future regardless of what the final box score said.
