I'm hoping we knock Wellemeyer around to 15 runs in the 1st inning. That way Lou can use Marmol for a couple more innings.

Has it been confirmed that Aram is good to go tomorrow?

I don't think so, just that he hopes the swelling in his hand has gone down enough by tomorrow night to play.

Ah, OK... helps that it's a night game.

No ML manager is stupid enough to let their best reliever pitch 2 innings in a blowout..... I mean they are in professional baseball they know what they are doing.

So, has ARam at least had x-rays or anything so we can confirm he didn't fracture anything?

Yep, X-Rays negative

Nice, thanks.

When Cesar Ituris has a .412 ave and an OPS over 1.000, you shouldnt be a starting pitcher in the major leagues.

Tom Glavine, Bronson Arroyo, and Dontrelle Willis thank you for throwing them out of the league :D

Marquis has also held Pujols to a .698 OPS. That means he's an ace!

Seriously though, it is a problem. Marquis can maintain being a league average pitcher and stay ok, but he's certainly not earning himself any points with Piniella. I don't think he's on thin ice as long as he remains that way (unless he starts losing his control or having really short outings), but knowing Piniella, he could slide there pretty quickly.

So far, he's done exactly what they signed him to do though. Put up league average production, and take the ball every time out. You just always have the feeling with Marquis though that the cliff is one or two starts away, even though he hasn't fallen so far. I think that's why he's so frustrating. You just never know what to expect out of him from game to game or even inning to inning.

He was above average for 2 months last year and was below average for 3 months. Average for 1 month.

Which put him right around average production over the course of the year. I'm not happy at all that he's a Cub, but he's been a decent enough fourth/fifth type starter for us so far.

I just pray he doesn't regress at all.

What about if Pujols has an OPS under .700?

Welly got off to a rough start in his last outing but settled down after about the 4th. If that happens again, the Cubs should have enough quality ABs to knock him around.

I always thought Wellemeyer's best out pitch was his change-up and in his last start, he was more of a two-seam/slider pitcher with hardly any off-speed stuff and had no command early on. I'm hoping he's overly amped about this start being against his former team and the only game on and struggles with the strike zone.

It's honestly gonna be tough to root against Wellemeyer. Part of me hopes he gives up 3 thru 6, and the Cubs tack on a bunch on the pen and win going away.

I always liked Todd as well and thought he never fully got his chance to show what he could do in a Cubs uniform.

I'm with you two.

According to rotoworld, hes quesionable. If I was Lou, Id sit him as a precaution, especially with Wellemyer pitching, but then again, If I was Lou, I wouldnt have...well, I'm not going to beat a dead horse(no thats not a tasteless Kentucky Derby joke), so I wont even say it.

If Aramis doesn't go, my guess is that Pie and Fontenot are both in the lineup tomorrow. I know Lou looks closely at the starting pitcher's splits because he has mentioned it several times. My guess is that he only really looks at closely the splits from last year and this year, and Wellemeyer brings this:

2007

vs left: .311/.391/.486

vs right: .200/.291/.335

2008

vs left: .262/.318/.443

vs right: .216/.282/.419

His career splits are not nearly as dramatic, but they are still there. Left-handers have a 44 point OPS advantage against him over his career. I think Lou will be much more concerned with this year and last year more than career numbers though.

So I really doubt you'll see Cedeno in there once again, but I think you have a pretty decent shot of seeing Pie.

I feel the need to keep up the "Free Pie" promotion.

So, stats since Lou and Gerald worked with Pie on his swing (April 21 vs. Mets, so now there have been a total of 11 games):

Felix Pie: 5 starts, 25 PA, 7 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, .333/.400/.523/.923

Reed Johnson: 10 starts, 50 PA, 8 H, .190/.280/.190/.470

Lou, play the hot hand in center, for once.

While we're at it, Cedeno's OPS is now nearly .300 higher than Theriot.

Theriot: .793

Cedeno: 1.059

So we have 2 younger players who have been hitting better than their competition, are better fielders, better speed, more potential, but they're sitting the bench for older players. I'm failing to see any sort of logic.

I don't mind Theriot getting playing time, especially if he keeps getting on at a .380 clip. Would be nice to at least mix in Cedeno more often to prevent any kind of tiring effect late in the year, which it could be argued happened to Theriot last September.

I am pretty sure the slump-buster shirt was meant to be worn for two straight days. You got to wear it on out when leaving her house the next morning ;-).

If Aramis is out today, whichis likely, is there any chance that we'll see Theriot, Cedeno, and Fontenot in the same lineup? We play the Reds after this, and DeRosas guaranteed to start all 3 of those, so this would be a pretty good game to experiment.

Wow the Cubs pitchers' streak of 7 straight seasons leading the majors in strikeouts is in serious jeopardy this year.

Nah, Carlos "one-man bullpen" Marmol will keep the streak alive himself.
