well yeah if we are talking about soriano vs murton +$16M then it is a no brainer. but straight up, who is a better player, at this point in time that is a no brainer too.

I think that would be in doubt this year.

The OBP different may make up for the power difference.

this team would not be better with murton in the lineup instead of soriano, please don't be insane.

That is not an insane proposition. And it's practically a lock when you then take the Soriano money and apply it to another position.

With Jim Hendry writing the checks? If we had Soriano's money last offseason he probably would have "bought" Kyle Loshe and 3-4 second basemen.

Even if Murton hit with an equal OPS as Soriano this year, Soriano's arm would far outshine Murton's horrible defense in left.

That said, to the OP, I'd also choose Soriano. Horrible contract.

This team would be better with Murton playing everyday and Soriano sitting on the bench? Hahahaha, seriously? Yeah, we should probably stick Ward at first and put DLee on the bench too.

This question made me think just how stacked our farm system could look like if we had a fire sale, then I realized that we wouldn't get as much back in return because of everyone's ridonkulous contracts

there aren't that many. soriano's is bad, no question. Marquis' contract is terrible. Eyre and Blanco are also stupid, but those are expiring after this year.

derosa's contract is a bargain (despite last offseason's hand-wringing, he'll probably have $13M of production in about a year and a half). Lee should give you at least $13M worth of production for at least the next 2 years. Ramirez will probably be overpaid by the end of his contract, but he's one of the better third basemen in the game. Lilly's contract isn't bad unless he tanks. Zambrano is probably overpaid, but given his reputation, I don't think most people around the game would perceive him as being overpaid. Kosuke looks good given the money right now; maybe by the end of his contract he won't be worth $13M, but that contract shouldn't be bad at all. Dempster's overpaid, but that one is coming off the books soon too.

All in all, there are really only two significant contracts on this team that are really bad. Soriano's will hurt in the long run; Marquis will be done after 2009. I don't think the Cubs are in quite as dire a situation long-term as some people (hi frosty) make it sound.

What if you could trade Soriano for a good young SS but still had to pay part of Soriano's contract? How much of it is too much to get rid of him?

The next problem is who has an extra SS that would actually want Soriano.

Soriano,Cedeno and $25 million for Khalil Greene?

Soriano would still have over $100m left on his deal. I think it's safe to say that SD would laugh right in our stupid faces.

Of course I have no knowledge of my opinion...

it just seems he does not play hard, he cannot take a walk to save his life and the amount of money he makes I would like to see a lot more plate discipline and hustle....

You expect a guy who hasant been able to walk and has little plate disipline all of his career to suddenly develop both of these things just because he got a big contract?

I say we trade for David Eckstein and put him in LF.

Naw, Juan Pierre is probably avaiable, i mean who wouldnt want slappy, you can get about the same performance minus all the power Soriano has

It would definitely have to be Soriano solely because of that albatross contract.

Ok I know Soriano is off to a bad start, but seriously guys. He didn't hit a home run till May last year anyways. The Dude will get hot and he will rake. He should NOT be in the lead off role but thats what he wants (still not saying it right). If you could get rid of his contract then it would be better I understand that, but to completely turn your back on him already seems a little hard.

It would be a heckuva bench though.

You're too new to know that most of those same people that are "turning their back" now had already done so at the time of the signing.

I'd love Soriano if he could still play 2B.

That's weird. I meant to type $75 million

yeah, let's include $75 million in the trade, which isn't even permitted within the rules of baseball, just so we can bring back the magical khalil greene.

oh man i'm so excited just thinking about him right now

Why do you hate Khalil Greene?

he's just not as good as people on here think he is. although i'm not sure hanley ramirez is even as good as people on here think khalil greene is. he'd present an upgrade at the position of course, but no point in doing so if you're going to make the team worse in other areas. but seeing as i don't own all of his baseball cards and daydream about his long blonde locks i must hate the guy.

I don't think you've seen his away numbers. If you had, you'd realize he's a very good player. Not to mention he's a good fielder. Also, I spend countless hours on the internet just staring at Greene's face...and I'm proud to admit it.
