I read here nearly every day, however don't post as often as I should.... Simply I just don't feel like getting into it with someone because they have a different opinion then my own...

Having said that, my thoughts on Hendry (I have been thinking about this for sometime.)

Why?

Why has no one from the top seen that this man has no clue?

Why have they not seen the LACK of direction that he seems to have!

- He starts out as "farm director" and produces how many "all-star" MLB players in the past 18 years?

- He has made ONE trade that has brought the Cubs value over more then one season. (see 3rd base)

- He continues signs FA's to 3 or 4 year contracts only to have no use for them the following season.

- Jones on the bench within one year and traded in two.

- DeRosa he has been trying to find a replacement for him for some time now.

- Marquis signs him to be a starter (20M+/3) only to have him compete for a job the second half of the season and into the future. (not all his fault be he signed him).

- Continues to trade prospects (if you would call them that) for one year/half season rentals. In addition to this, I have never seen a team trade so many MLB players for PTBNL, this sets off some bells in my head, why?

- Traded Pinto, Nolasco and more for Pierre to come hit the ball at second all season... It's not the fact of who he traded, its that he has no direction. Why even trade for Pierre, just to let him leave 1 season later (right choice, but he never should have traded for him to start with). Sure I understand he realized Pierre sucks, but he should have seen that before he traded 3 players for him. If the players he traded turn out to suck no big deal, but he has not given me confidence in his ability to judge talent.

- Poor FA choices: Spent 300M+ (that was about the amount right?) on Free Agents last season. The contracts are going to kill us in the later years of them (he will not be here). He got:

A second basemen he has tried to replace.

A starting pitcher who is 8 games over .500 in 194 MLB starts.

A starting LF who is VERY GOOD!

A starting pitcher who is good his first 12 starts and VERY BAD after. (who is the 5th starter?)

- How many times has he traded away a player with a bloated contract for nothing.... I would assume he would get nothing for them, but maybe that is a hint he made a poor choice in the first place to sign the player to the contract. (he seems to trade players at there lowest value and trades for players at there highest value)

He has just continued to make very bad choices and with what seems to be very little direction on were the team is going. I just don't understand, why he did not get fired with Baker and MacPhail? There are GM's in the game today that are worst then him. However there has to be someone that is better!

It just makes me sick that this team has ZERO direction from him.

All the above and many other poor choices he has made makes me really worry about NOT signing Prior. This is not a post about he should have kept Prior, it's about the lack of skills he has show in evaluation of players. His judgment in putting a team together. His ability to NOT see or give this team any direction.

I used to think he was a very good GM. After the Ramirez, Karros (is spelling right) and Nomar (only because of name, he never did anything for us) trades. But this guy truly sucks!

It could be worse. We could have Kenny Williams. Sure, he got his team a WS win, but afterword, he weant completely mad and made some truely ridiculous moves.

i'll take horrific and ridiculous moves from a cubs gm for 5 years if they got a world series ring at least once.

I dont agree with everything that you said football. However You do bring up a good point in that there seems to be no direction. Every move seems to be a reaction to last weeks problems. Instead of being in front of issues. Also what kind of team the Cubs want to be seems to be dictated by last years World Champion. Lastly the Cubs strive to be good under Hendry. In general except for 2006 they have been good. Sometimes good is the biggest enemy of being great. He has learned how to be good. So he keeps doing those things over and over again. He has never had the Cubs great and doesnt seem to know how.

It's hard for there to be a direction when the team philosphy changes every year or is based on something unobtainable, such as improving clutch hitting.

To accurately assess Hendry's tenure as GM, all one really has to do is look at our current situation at SS. And it truly is a situation.

I hope Hendry trades Theriot for ARod.

The SS hole in the whole system is quite annoying.

I can't really disagree with any of those points, but it seems like only the negative moves made by Hendry are highlighted. There are several good, as you mentioned with the acquisition of Aramis Ramirez.

I have been a Cub fan for about 20 years now, and I can say this - I think this organization is headed in the right direction. Sometimes moves work out, sometimes they don't. I feel that the Cubs organization is starting to see that OB% is important (maybe it was just Dusty Baker who hated to clog bases).

Somebody list all of the positive things Hendry has done and then weigh the results.

It's easy to complain, but much more difficult to actually suggest alternative solutions. How many GMs can you say do a consistently good job? Like most, Hendry has made his share of blunders, but he also landed us two all-star players in Lee and Ram for players who aren't even in baseball anymore. And if he brings the Cubs a World Series title, I don't care how much money he spends to do it.

Well, that's not our job.

It's Hendry's, and he's horrible at it.

The worst GM's in the game are capable of pulling off a miracle deal. Dave Littlefield (yes, the guy who traded Kenny Lofton and Aramis Ramirez for a bag of balls) traded Brian Giles for Jason Bay and Oliver Perez. Just because a guy pulls off a trade that makes the team better than they were before the trade shouldn't be grounds for a lifetime contract.

As far as suggestions at SS, the suggestions have been made over and over. Hendry didn't have SS on his radar. That was pretty obvious. Theriot is a light hitting utility middle infielder and nothing more. Yet, Hendry treats him like he's some elite player that shouldn't have to resort to battle for playing time.

At a point where you would consider Jose Hernandez an upgrade at SS, one has to come to the realization that Hendry really, really dropped the ball this offseason.

Like most, Hendry has made his share of blunders, but he also landed us two all-star players in Lee and Ram for players who aren't even in baseball anymore.

Who cares? What matters is whether or not the team wins. And Hendry's teams have not come close to winning enough games that it would make it unfair to complain.

People have been suggesting alternatives for years. The best alternative would be to stop living in 1950 and actually adopt some objective analytical methods.

It must be exhausting being you. Everything you say is so negative.

I don't get much enjoyment in lying to myself.

I think I agree with this.

Except they sucked in 2005 as well. But this goes back to the MacPhail statement about being competitive within the division. It was a horrible strategy. Everybody likes to talk about the playoffs being a crapshoot, but that story is overplayed. A crapshoot suggest quality of team plays no role whatsoever. You can still tilt things in your favor by making the best team possible. And as a top payroll team in the NL, there's no excuse not to have been for several years.

long list

Why didn't you "green" Damian Miller for Michael Barrett?

Also, we didn't really draft Josh Hamilton. We traded the pick to the reds, they told us who to draft.

Such lists and grading of deals are unnecessary.

407-404. Zero 90 win seasons. Given the resources he's had, that's pathetic. Also, consider that he had tremendous input into the makeup of the team as Asst GM during the previous 220-266 seasons, and was the main man for the minor leagues in the previous half decade. Jim Hendry has been given more than enough resources and more than enough time to get the job done, and he hasn't done it.

No real reason to green/red the Miller trade. I tried of course to green what I feel were good. Red what I think were bad. However in doing so if I did that with most or every one of the moves I would open this topic up for major debate about what others (myself also) feel are good/bad moves. I did not want to do that with every trade or FA; simply because of time and also I don't want to be hit with... "well the move was great".... "NO it was not" type of a thread. Just to keep the noise down I guess! :)

Sorry to Quote myself....

I should say the thread is about Hendry so it would be a good idea to debate his moves. However I did not want to debate EVERYONE of them... Just thought I should say that before someone says something like. "well this is a topic about our GM, so every move he made is important to talk about"..

=P~

Hendry has made some nice moves but mostly bad. My personal opinion is we should be a much better team with the payroll that we have. Overpaying mediocre and average players will get us nowhere.
