What should have been in 84 I hope happens in 08.

HA, good point.

his (Fukudome) range makes him a fill-in candidate in center -- which, along with second base, are the team's two biggest weak spots.

What the hell. They do know we have Theriot playing short, right?

So, wait, why isn't DeRosa considered a gritty B.A. like theriot is? I mean he's white, he even has the 5 o clock shaddow beard half the time...

Derosa is a decent hitter. Gritty players are generally poor hitters or have a last name of Jeter.

He's also too tall and looks too old. Gritty players tend to be stuck looking like they're barely out of puberty and are often bordering on midgetdom.

It's pretty funny to hear national experts continue to believe our short stop situation is solved because of Theriot.

Heck, a lot of Cub fans really believe this too.

.....I hate when these guys pick us to win it. Just makes me feel bad. I can't remember a time when we were picked to win anything and actually delivered.

To be fair, if Theriot got hurt on August 26th and didn't return the rest of the season, most of us would be content with his line of .288/.351/.376/.727. Its the fact that he "wore down" and "hit" .188/.236/.239/.475 after that date that makes us doubt him.

In fact that gives me an idea....

I never bought the "he wore down" line. His line at the end of the season was very close to what one would have expected for a player with his resume, given a full season of exposure to major league pitching. Theriot can make contact with strikes. Pitchers know this now, and pitch him accordingly.

The Cubs have the starting pitching to get to the playoffs. They don't have enough to get any farther than that.

I never understand when people say stuff like this. Getting to the playoffs is much harder than actually having success once you're there.

If the Tigers end up with less wins than the Cubs, I'll barf a fart

They picked the AL and the NL to split interleague play which is why. The AL dominated the last couple years which is why that league had more wins than the NL.

That made me laugh way harder than it should have.

Seriously. Once you make it to the playoffs, its just about luck as much as it is about talent... which isn't the case so much over the course of 162 games in the regular season. But some people choose to romanticize the playoffs as if the team that emerges from them was actually the best that year... no matter what evidence there is to the contrary.

Getting to the playoffs is priority #1. If we can do that this year without sacrificing our chances to do so in the coming years, we absolutely need to do that. Trading away players that might add a 5% chance to make the playoffs next year, in exchange for an additional 1% chance to win the world series this year would just be a poor utilization of resources.
