Optioned RHPs Jose Ascanio and Sean Gallagher to Triple-A Iowa; Reassigned OF Josh Kroeger to Minor League camp.

That can't be good for the 'ole trade value.

What would possibly give you that idea? He was never going to make the opening day roster. Optioning back to AAA changes nothing.

This doesn't mean anything. The starters who are ahead of Gallagher are all stretching out to more innings and the bullpen guys are starting to work more on back to back days. It makes sense to send Gallagher down to get regular work. Gallagher essentially had no shot of winning a SP gig with the Cubs this season with Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Dempster, Marquis, Lieber and Marshall all ahead of him.

Actually it has no relevance to the 'ole trade value.

Yes, I have to agree that this does nothing to his trade value as the "O's" have wanted him as the centerpiece of the supposed deal. Sean basically had no shot to make the roster as a SP with all the SP in front of him. I would even have to say that even if Sean had pitched lights out during camp that with the veterans signed and the contracts it would've been difficult. Sean needed to be sent back so that he can get some innings and I would've to think that hopefully the Cubs have given up the idea of using him out of the pen. I would also have to say that even though Sean said it wasn't affecting him that with all the questions and rumors about the trade that it was. I had a great conversation with Sean after he had gotten the news and it was expected and I told him to just concentrate on pitching and things you can control.

Is this going to be a tit-for-tat thing but please get the facts straight as the "O's" knew all along that Hill was untouchable.....

Lou also said Cubbie today...sorry if you have a problem with it, I don't think you will be successful trying to get people to stop saying it. I am indifferent on "Cubbies" so whatever, but I think that you care way too much about what people call the team. It wouldn't matter if we called them the Chicago Houjvadillas it would make ZERO difference on the play of the team, which is the thing that matters.

So you don't care if they change the name of wrigley, then, right?

I don't care if they change the name of Wrigley because it will put more money towards winning (as long as that also goes with getting a better GM than Jim Hendry) and no matter what they officially call it I will still always call it Wrigley Field. What they want me to call it doesn't matter to me.

Fair enough, but I seriously doubt the bolded part. Unless by "winning" you mean "Sam Zell's Wallet"

I would be upset if a name change did not increase the payroll, but if that's a direct result of a name change, and if we had a GM who was more responsible with the money he was given to spend, then I would be all for it. I won't call it anything but Wrigley, but if slapping a new name on the outside of the stadium (it would be nice though to keep the Wrigley sign on the outside of the stadium) allows the Cubs to spend more on getting good players then do it ASAP. A championship is worth more than a name could ever be.

I'll agree with this 100%. If changing the name of wrigley means a W.S. title then, by all means, slap "American Girl Field" on that red sign out front A.S.A.P. Problem is, the money will probably go to pad Zells already-fat wallet. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but currently the tribune (Zell) owns both the cubs and wrigley. Therefore, when he sells the naming rights, the tribune (he) will get the money. Then he'll sell the team. The team will then be the responsibility of the new manager.

And unless the company who buys the rights has to pay a fee yearly to keep them, I would doubt the new owner sees any of the money. It'd be like me selling you tickets to a game, then taking the money you give me for the tickets and giving it back to you so you can buy more snacks. Why would Zell do that.

Granted - I could have this process all completely wrong...but I just have the suspicion that money will go to zell - not good players in the future.

Unfortunately, I think your right. I doubt Zell would even consider changing the name if he wasn't getting paid for it. If there is some way though to have the stadium(name unchanged)+team sold together and then the new owner sold the naming rights to increase the payroll, I would support it. However, as it currently stands, I doubt the Cubs benefit from the name change as long as the name change happens while the team is still under Zell's control, so that would annoy me.

Posted

Let's put it this way, you have the process all wrong. It's not like Allstate or whoever would just walk up to Sam Zell and hand him $40 million dollars and he walks away. The point of selling the naming rights is to increase the revenue stream, thus increasing the sale value of the team. The money comes in over time, not all at once, and not directly to Sam Zell (though as owner, he has a right to do whatever he wants, whether you or I or anyone we know likes it or not). Baseball is a business, and will always be a business. When business is good, it's usually reflected on the field.

To place demands like "if they call this place Tampon Park it better be in exchange for a WS" is simply ludicrous. If it was a matter just spending more money, the Yankees would win every year.
