But it's not Hawk and Stone, it's Farmer and Stone, and Farmer is utterly worthless.

I had a brain freeze for a sec.

Having two pitchers in the booth isn't ideal as far as a duo.

I was thinking that as well, I usually like catchers as managers and pbp.

I'm uncomfortable to the fact that both are also right handed. There's no balance either!

I used to like Stone. But then he got fired (right or wrong), and something happened.

Steve Stone was the best announcer the Cubs ever had.
Um, no. Jack Brickhouse, Harry Caray, Vince Lloyd, and Pat Hughes are/were better. I liked Stoney, but best ever? Not even in the same ballpark.

Steve Stone was NOT fired. He quit.

because the Dusty-run clubhouse was a complete clown show. Steve Stone compliments Roy Oswalt and a fine pitching performance and then he has Alou/Mercker calling the booth to complain? what sane manager would allow that to happen? i don't blame him one bit for quitting....the whole situation was a joke

I know, but it seems like some of the people here are saying that Stone is just bitter because he was fired, when that's really not the case, and the Cubs got rid of everyone that was said to be causing problems for him. I think Stone's actually been really positive about the Cubs considering everything that went down.

What has changed about Stone is that he doesn't feel a need to disguise his innate "holier than thou" attitude anymore. At least, that's how I see it. I don't enjoy Stone's talk show commentary really at all. He comes off like he's looking down his nose at everyone now.

I really didn't clue into that when he was doing color, especially when it was with Harry. I really, really liked Stoney when he was with Harry. He was great, IMO. But he's really changed now.

I think I'm going to say it.

Oh yes.

Wait for it.

I like Brenly better than Stone now.

whew. there. I said it.

That's not what happened. Dippy was the one who complemented Oswalt's performance, which was not actually fine, and Mercker, who was friends with Dippy, called the booth to give him crap as friends are wont to do. Stone then went to the media exaggerating this nonissue and continued to lie about the nature of his conflicts with the players.

Steve Stone is not a nice person.

Len and Bob are great. Bob, to me, seems to get better every season. I was a big Stone fan, and will have many fond memories, but I am happy with what we have.

Though I've never met him, I've heard others say he's very nice in person. I think he got himself into a situation no broadcaster should get into: becoming the story, instead of the reporter. And he handled it badly. But let's be honest, the Cubs clubhouse was a nightmare that year, it wasn't just this one incident. There's blame to be shared all around for '04; it ranks as one of the most disappointing Cub teams of all time.

Agreed! And I am looking forward to the time when Guillen or the Sox players can't take any more of Stone's criticism. Perhaps we'll have a repeat of the LaRussa/Piersall episode, in which the manager "came after" the color guy -- I love those post-game fireworks.

If Stoney can't handle the players that complain, then there is no way he would ever become a GM. That being said, I enjoyed listening to him and I appreciate someone in the booth expressing his feelings when a player screws up. It's bad enough that the "official scorer" gets lobbied for hits and trashed when they don't bend.

I agree, that season was disappointing on so many levels.

I pretty much hate most announcers but what exactly makes Bob Brenly great? His stories seem forced and take too long. His analysis is pretty milk toast which would be ok except that his partner is not Mr. excitement either. There's something about Bob Brenly's tone of voice that is completely uncompelling.

The nicest thing you can say about Brenly is that he's not Jeff Brantly dumb. Still, I'd rather have an idiot like Sutcliffe than Boring Bob Brenly.*

*I reserve the right to retract this statement about 2 innings into the next game Sutcliffe does.

I don't know. I like his tone of voice, he seems like a good natured guy. Like you said, he's not an idiot, which puts him ahead of many right there. Sad, but true. And he's not condescending. Some of these guys sound like they think they're entitled to never be questioned -- Morgan's a good example.

I'm not sure why you say Brenly's voice in not compelling. He sounds like a guy I would like to hang out with. I find him to be very compelling. He's not a 'baseball genius' and doesn't claim to be. If that's not compelling to you, then I can understand it. It's a matter of personal taste.

I loved listening to stoney. He mostly talked baseball and actually had a clue. Sure, he had a big mouth...

I'd have trashed the Cubs too if they fired me just to appease some of their crybaby players.

Stoney was the man. I never understood the sudden hate on him.

You haven't heard a baseball game called unless you heard one by Harry and Steve. Those were good times.

The Cubs did not fire Steve Stone; he refused to re-sign with the team.

The bottom line is he left on his own and he has lived to regret the decision. Last year he was dropping hints about wanting to return to the Cubs (with McDonough in toe) while also trying to be diplomatic about Len & Bob. He wanted a full-time baseball job. ESPN did not retain him and he failed to get the full-time gig from the Nationals... Stone was maintaining his local voice on The Score in hopes that the Cubs job would become available with a change of ownership. The Sox job just landed in his lap (mostly because they need something to boost their abysmal radio ratings from last season).

let's not forget that they also need someone who knows what the hell they're talking about.
