Saw a quote on another website that the Cubs might be looking at Cody Ross from the Marlins. Not anything to get excited about, but certainly would be cheaper than Byrd or Payton.

btw did anyone read the thread title and immediately think "reds catcher david ross"? i figured the cubs were going to go trade for a veteran because they were scared to start the year with soto.

It's from OH. A poster there claimed the Cubs scouts were at the Orioles/Marlins game to look at Ross (as well as Roberts).

Meph and I had a discussion about Ross a few weeks back. We both would love to have Ross, I just don't see a reason for the Marlins to get rid of him.

De Aza is horrible. If Maybin needs more seasoning in the minors, Ross is an ideal replacement for them.

I hope I'm wrong and he's platooning with Pie in CF. That would be perfect.

Getting Ross would be amazing, he would be a good platoon partner for Pie and if Pie figures out how to hit lefties (hopefully, but probably an unrealistic hope...his minor league splits show hes very bad against lefties, although he did hit lefties much better while playing for Licey...but that is just a winter league...bleh), Ross would be a good bat off the bench to mash lefties. His career line vs. Southpaws is .301/.369/.639 niceeeee. Anyway a platoon of Ross and Pie would put up well above average offensive numbers.

BP weighs in with a projection of:

.271/.349/.507 EqA.284 17.5 VORP , 2.8 WARP (in 302 PA)

Also this projected platoon split - vs. LHB .286/.369/.523

I would take that for the right price... though its affect on Pie's development (especially in a straight platoon) needs some figuring.

I've never heard of David Ross.

He's one of the reds top 3 catchers

paul bako is one of the reds' catchers, so david ross is one of the reds' top 2 catchers.

Dusty Baker is the reds' manager, so paul bako could be the opening day starting catcher.

I think people may be overlooking that Ross in center field is kind of a cheat. That's fine for the Marlins, they've apparently given up on the idea of playing defense, I don't know about here, though. How much is Cody Ross in center field than Murton? Ross in center field is one of those cheats similar to when teams would play Dustan Mohr in center field, and you'd look up their positions and say "Oh yeah, Mohr, he's a center fielder, he's played there" but really, not really.

Aside from that, this has typical Cub move written all over it. Pay out the ying-yang for a guy who had an impossibly good year who has only been available on the waiver wire about 5 times in his career.
