I have never really associated Wrigley Field with the gum even though I know the obvious connection is there, but it really is no different than Turner Field and TBS. Sure, the connection is there, but I don't think of it as a TV station stadium. I certainly recognize that the man that it is named after a media mogul, but the advertising connection is almost nil to me. Maybe I am different than the average person, but that is how I feel. I also can look at the Winston Cup. I never really thought of the Winston Cup as advertising (again, probably just me) until they made a big deal about the name change and now it is obvious as they rename the series more often than Pac Bell Park.

I also question how often people will think of the new name, but having it there does hold value to me and many others, I'm sure. Think about Sox Park, The Coliseum in Oakland, The Ballpark in Arlington, The Skydome, Dolphin Stadium over the years changing it's name, Candlestick Park, among others who's names have changed over the years, but yet many people cannot tell you what these places are named today. I say this because I am not sure of what the value is in buying naming rights to a place like Wrigley Field. Aside from the opening montage of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball when they slap the name up on the screen, how often would the sponsor name be brought up?

I think that the name Wrigley Field has limited connections to the chewing gum and that the value of the naming rights are limited for such a venue even though Wrigley Field is so famous.

So let me get this straight. Zell has already said he is going to sell the Cubs and Wrigley separately. However, before he sells Wrigley he wants to sell the naming rights, so he can pocket an extra 30mil, and stick the new owner of Wrigley with the name?

For some reason that seems very unethical to me...and in my mind may cause the value of Wrigley to drop to any potential buyer.

I think unethical is a little strong, but maybe underhanded would fit. Zell will squeeze every last penny out of the Cubs and Wrigley Field with no regard for the future of the team since he has no stake in it. Has anyone considered how the Cubs use the Wrigley Field name to sell merchandise? I would be interested to see the estimated income brought in by using the Wrigley Field name, as opposed to how much the Cubs could get by selling naming rights.

Thats a good point. I know I have a "Wrigley Field" Shirt as well as my Cub's shirts.

That's what my wife bought when we went.

I hate "wrigley field" shirts with every fiber of my being.

Why?

I'm guessing it has something to do with the idea half the people there are going for the experience and not for the game.

I have a Wrigley Field shirt. I see what you're saying but out here nobody says stuff like that about Cub fans.

I mean I could see it being lame if I had a bunch of Wrigley Field shirts and no Cubs shirts, but I have one Wrigley shirts and a couple Cubs shirts. Nothing wrong with loving Wrigley Field.

I think it's because Cub fans get a lot of guff about loving Wrigley more than the Cubs. And that's right, I said guff.

Juicy Fruit Field

Big Red Field would really stink, wouldn't it?

Orbit Field, Eclipse Park, Big League Chew Stadium...

Yeah, it could be bad.

God damn you, Sam Zell.

And if there would be some company out there that would buy the naming rights and would just keep it as Wrigley Field, the PR for that would be oustanding, and I know I would become a customer of whatever company it was just because of that move.

Does anyone know since it is considered a landmark or a historic building, can they legally change the name?

A ha! A very good question, sir. I didn't even think about this.

For those that think that people would still call it Wrigley, well what happened when Comiskey sold its name?

I still call it Comiskey.

And it's a flipping NAME of a ballpark. Who really cares?

maybe you don't care, and that's fine, but judging by the number of people who have called sam zell a piece of crap in his thread, i think it's safe to say that a lot of people - probably the majority of cub fans - cares that the name of the place where the cubs play continue to be named "wrigley field"

and i'll repeat my point that, as far as i know, there is no precedent for renaming the most historical arenas in any given sports. this goes for baseball (yankee, fenway, dodger), football (soldier field), basketball (madison square garden). i don't care if sam zell is a shrewd businessman; steinbrenner and john henry are both very shrewd businessmen, and neither one of those changed the name of the park in which their team plays.

Or Old Style Field.

I am almost suprised American Sports have not sold advertisments on the jerseys like we see in soccer, given the amount of money to be made in jersey sales.
