Mark DeRosa was taken to a local hospital during Saturday’s practice after apparently suffering an irregular heartbeat while working out.

DeRosa, who has had the problem before, was alert and sitting up in the ambulance after being taken off on a stretcher. The Cubs continued their workouts after DeRosa left and likely won't comment until their done for the day.

I sure hope he's alright....

DeRosa being out for any significant amount of time could seriously screw up Hendry's bargaining position on a potential Roberts deal.

That aside, I just hope the guy is alright (as it appears he is).

Poor guy, hope he's alright. But this goes to show you that having a player like Roberts to provide us depth would only help the team greatly. If DeRosa had a heart condition or even injury and missed extended time, our new starting 2B right now would be Mike Fontenot or Alex Cintron.

According to The Score, DeRosa has dealt with irregular heartbeats and has taken medication for this condition throughout his life. It sounds like this is mostly a precautionary hospitilization and he is expected to be ok.

Cintron & Fontenot? I'd think the options would be better with Cedeno at SS and slide Theriot to 2B, or Theriot at SS and Cedeno or Patterson at 2B. If worst comes to worst, you could even put Soriano at 2B and Murton in LF (sounds best to me).

Mark DeRosa, who left in an ambulance after suffering an irregular heartbeat Saturday, was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons only, the Cubs said.

"Mark is doing fine," manager Lou Piniella said. "He came in with a rapid heartbeat from doing things on the field and (was) having a little trouble breathing. So they called in the medical team. He's completely stable. Better to be safe than sorry with an irregular heartbeat, so they sent him to the hospital for testing. But he's fine." Feb. 23 - 4:47 pm et

Having been down here this week, I can honestly say that Mark DeRosa has been the single nicest player on the entire Cubs team, and there isn't even a second place. When every other player blew off people asking for autographs (for which I don't fault them at all), DeRosa stopped every time and took a minute for a picture, an autograph, or just a handshake. The guy has immediately become the guy who I will be rooting for in every at bat, every game.

As such, i REALLY hope everything's okay with him. He's a terrific guy.

It took about two weeks for DeRo to become one of my favorite Cubs last year, and it's to the point where he's right behind Lee, Z and Ramirez now. He really seems like an awesome guy.

I'm probably getting a little ahead of things here, but I think it would be wise for the Cubs to have a good staff of physicians on hand to be there for DeRosa when the Cubs win the World Series.

It just makes sense.

my best friend had this. he would have heart palpatations maybe once every 2 years or something. he eventually had an outpatient procedure that involved inserting a thin wire into his chest and essentially giving a small electrical shock to his heart, which apparently fixed the problem

There are a lot of different types of irregular heartbeats that someone may get, some more serious than others. It sounds like your friend either had an ICD placed- which is designed to shock the heart out of an irregular rhythm if it goes into it. This doesn't necessarily fix the problem, it just corrects the problem when it happens. It's also possible he has a pacemaker- which is designed to instruct the heart to beat regularly,

Derosa can have any number of different irregular heartbeats that can vary in severity. It is reassuring that he has had this before and still managed to be a productive player. Therefore, I am less worried.

sounds like what your friend had was svt, supra-ventricular tachycardia. that's a common treatment for it. that's also what joey harrington and bryce drew had--but their's had to be fixed via surgery, i believe.

i don't know if derosa was diagnosed with it or not. there are a lot of different types and causes of tachycardia. sounds like what he has is idiopathic tachycardia, or "we don't know what the hell is causing it"-tachycardia.

it sounds like he had catheter ablation, which is a procedure meant to destroy certain irregular electrical pathways, as svt is sometimes caused by an abnormal or "unauthorized" electrical channel that interferes with the hearts primary one, causing the heart to beat out of rythm.

doesn't sound like he had a procedure to shock his heart back into a normal rythm, at least, that's the way i interpreted it.
