oh if ARam and the Cubs ever have a messy divorce, you can bet that 90% of the reporters in the chicago will make sure that he's thrown squarely under the bus. it's completely bush league but that seems to be how it works.

It's funny how Mark Grace, who did have a messy divorce from the Cubs and was as slow as molasses around the bases, was never similarly thrown under the bus.

Grace was friendly with many of the sportscasters around town. I'm thinking that's why.

That's part of it. He was also extremely gritty (wink, wink, nudge nudge).

I wonder if media guys even put any thought into the fact that the foreign-born players might be not-so-friendly because they have a hard time communicating and are probably uncomfortable around them. That might be logical, no?

That makes far too much sense for most sports writers to comprehend.

i know you were probably dying to mention grit in some manner, but what a bad example.

grace would hit sure triples and wait at second while outfielders were still chasing down the ball, just to pad his doubles totals. how was he "gritty"?

(white + eye black) + no batting gloves = definition of grit

One of the things I always appreciated about Sammy was that he never wanted to take the day off, unlike many ballplayers who were get 1-2 games off every few weeks. That doesn't excuse him from leaving the team that day, but the good that he did for this franchise FAR outweighs his early departure from a meaningless game.

He was white.

Don't forget he never cared to keep himself in great shape or work out.

Let's not forget about the degrading comments about women.

I'm not even trying to bash Grace. I was a fan of his. He was criticized for not having enough power, but he was fairly often in the vicinity of a .900 OPS thanks to his ~.400 OBP. That said, if we're going to be hyper critical of these guys' personal faults, Grace could definitely hang.

The phrase "false hustle" is awesome.

Maybe the worst thing I've ever heard.

He was moving so fast it was like hustling. But deep down inside, he really didn't want to hussle.

I believe your sig violates board rules.

And I approve the Grace-bashing that has come up. :)

True. One of the reasons I couldn't help but like him though was because he didn't give a damn.

Such crap journalism. I'm sure Sosa may not have always been the best teammate, and a lot of what he did may have been ego-driven, but I think Sosa usually gave his best out there. That article is horrible.

They should replace Sosa with Todd Hundley. Then at least they would have gotten something right.

Thanks a lot vance I had completely forgot about that loser.

Don't hate on Gracie just b/c they stupidly accused Sammy of not hustling.

Sammy worked hard and hustled. I am still pissed at him for walking out on the team and lying about it, but that has nothing to do with his hustle, IMO.

I think the biggest dog in Chicago Sports history is Ben Wallace. I really hate that SOB.

Maybe not in Chicago sports history, but ya, I really dislike that guy.

False hustle.

That's got to be the new game thread phrase for '08. Bye-bye "fake rally"

I'm not sure how false hustle works, but I am fairly certain it involves mirrors and holographic projection.

Sammy may have been driven by his ego, but he left it all out there a lot more often than not.

exactly. It wasn't up until the very end that I would have considered him the type of player to dog it. He busted his ass constantly.

He busted it down the line, he busted it around the bases, and he busted it in the field. Sammy was a lot of things, but a slacker was not one of them.

Yeah, it's mind boggling how someone would include him with the slackers.

Someone else nailed it too -- should just replace Hundley for Sammy. There's your list.
