The Tribune continues to drag his name through the mud for leaving a completely meaningless game early. They can soapdrop the hell off.

While I understand the inclusion of Farnsworth as a guy who never reached his potential, I'm still more incredulous about him than Sammy. If we are talking "fiery" and "passionate about the game" no one really tops the balls-out approach he brought. Not condoning brawls and the like but if I had to pick one it would be his asskicking of Paul Wilson a few years ago. To say that he "dogged" anything while with the Cubs is simply untrue. Another great example of shoddy Chicago sportswriting.

Brian Urlacher played with an arthritic back, and Dick Butkus played with a limp. Sammy Sosa also played football. He ran the bootleg on the final day of the 2004 season by leaving Wrigley Field before the start of the Cubs' final game. That typified Sosa's personna as a "me" guy, and he should have spelled his first name Sammi to reflect the "I" in his name. There was plenty of false hustle in his game.

Furthermore, he didn't even hustle around the bases following any of his 545 HR with the club.

Farnsworth was a 47th round draft choice. When used properly he was a pretty damn good relief pitcher. He's probably going to have a 10+ year major league career. I'm pretty sure he reached his potential.

I think the fact that he had off-the-field issues is beside the point.

Wasn't Farnsworth alleged to have fallen asleep out in the bullpen due to being hung over? I think Farns' nightlife affected his ability to perform at times and I think that is probably what the article is referring to.

The worst part about Sosa leaving early is that it left the Cubs -1.

But Burnitz brought us back to 0, so it all worked out.

He sure did.

Such crap journalism. I'm sure Sosa may not have always been the best teammate, and a lot of what he did may have been ego-driven, but I think Sosa usually gave his best out there. That article is horrible.

They should replace Sosa with Todd Hundley. Then at least they would have gotten something right.

Nothing like kicking a man when he's down, why wasn't this written in 98 or 01? I've never really been a big Sammy fan but when he was up there was always a chance for the ball to leave the park and that was quite exciting and productive for the team.

and people wonder why some of us think that prior is being thrown under the bus

I'm actually quite surprised he's not listed in the article.

Both Chicago newspapers really struggle with their sports sections and what they cover. It used to be you could find all of last night's games for the local teams on the front page of the TRIB sports, now you have to dig thru 6 pages to find them. Having Bob Knight in Illini colors this morning is provocative. Why not Northwestern?

I know that banging Sammy Sosa is the current rage, but where were these 'enlightened writers' in 1998? They were right there with all of us cheering Sammy and his 66 HR. We all bought into it and yes, Sammy had a large head and had bad facial acne-but the guy always hustled. He had a bad arm and couldn't respond like he used to, but he ran to first, ran to the OF. He cared and it may have been about himself first, but he cared. Can you say the same thing about ARAM?

Everyone knows that an anti-Cubs article is a must read in the TRIB, just like an Oprah front page article sells the Sun-Times off the news stands. These journalists(?) ran out of things to write about the Cubs on Jan. 3rd.

Although I agree with the rest of your post, I have to say, "Ugh," to the bolded.

The phrase "false hustle" is awesome.

Maybe the worst thing I've ever heard.

When I hear "false hustle" I think Jim Edmonds...I'm going to miss his fake dives next year....and his 3 strike outs a game.

oh if ARam and the Cubs ever have a messy divorce, you can bet that 90% of the reporters in the chicago will make sure that he's thrown squarely under the bus. it's completely bush league but that seems to be how it works.

Yep. Please never suggest otherwise unless it's actually warranted, because God is it annoying.
