I know being compensating with both the 3rd and 5th rd picks from the 9ers would have been great, but let's face it, the Bears lose nothing.

That's like showing a dog a big, fat piece of meat and then suddenly switching it out for a dry bone. Thanks for getting our hopes up!

I'm hearing alot more talk of the Bears possibly going after a RB in round 1. The Benson injury is the big play.

I've been thinking this way for a while now. If they go BPA, it's very likely that will be a RB. It's clearly a need. Sadly, I could see the Bears waiting til the 3rd to get an OT, depending on what DT or WR is there in the 2nd.

If that's the case, they better have some inside knowledge about likely June 1 cuts. It doesn't matter who runs the ball if all they do is add a third round (and likely 2nd/3rd rate) rookie to the tackle rotation.

I'd have rather they just spent the big money on Turner rather than draft someone. I'm tired of the unknown quantities at that position.

I refuse to believe that after gutting the oline and not signing any FA for those pos, that angelo wouldnt draft Oline early and often, no matter how bad Benson is hurt

Agreed. Face it, you've got a much better chance getting decent production from a no-name RB than putting together a solid line with scrap-heap Ts & Gs.

If we improve our line, Peterson and some June 1st cut would probably be passable for the season.

If we ignore the line, anyone we could realistically put back there will suck. Plus Grossman will always be on his back.

Draft line early.

Honestly at this point it would not surprise me to see the Bears take Mendenhall in the 1st or an OT.

I've also heard more then one analyst talk about the possibility of the Bears trading up to get McFadden. Although, that would probably surprise me quite a bit.

Who's this Mendenhall guy... isn't it Meddenhall or something? ;)

Trib[/url]"]The Bears signed restricted free-agent Brandon McGowan to a one-year tender offer worth $1.417 million Tuesday, leaving receiver Rashied Davis as the lone unsigned restricted free agent.

........

As it stands now, the Bears are likely to return all their safeties from last season, with Mike Brown and Kevin Payne returning from injuries and Danieal Manning, Adam Archuleta and McGowan still in the fold.

Meanwhile, Davis' status is unknown. He had been getting interest from the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks.

Adam Archuleta, special teams ace!

So we aren't planning on upgrading safety... sweet.

Can't wait for Mike Brown to get injured and our defense become immediately worse.

Safety wasn't much of an issue late in the season. The Bears have much bigger issues than safety, namely OL, RB, WR, DT.

I don't see DT as nearly a big a problem as S. At least the Bears have 1 pro bowl caliber DT who is a reasonable bet to play 16 games. All the other guys they cycled in there are basically of the same caliber as all the safeties the Bears used. And Dvoracek is probably capable of being better than any Bears safety.

OT, OG, WR, QB and probably RB are needed ahead of S. But safety is definitely a need.

I didn't say S wasn't a need. Safety and DT are in the same boat for me. One probowl caliber player at both. Sure Harris is more likely to play 16 games than Brown, but that's not saying much...neither is likely to play 16 when all is said and done. After Harris and Brown, you have a similar situation with DT and S having a young player w/ upside who hasn't shown anything in live game action (Dvoracek and Payne). And a solid but not spectacular veteran (Adams and McGowan). Toeiana and Idonje both showed flashes, but no DT outside of Harris has the talent that D Manning has at safety. Throw in the fact that DT is a much more important position to the Bears success than either safety position, and I rank it as a bigger need.

I think you are downplaying the very significant difference between Harris and Brown. And that is where the biggest difference is. The Bears could use a DT to slot in next to Brown. They still need an elite safety.

I think you are downplaying the significant difference between the DT position's importance and the FS/SS position's importance. A good group of DTs, makes the DEs better, and make the LBs better, namely Urlacher the team's best player. That in-turn makes the pass rush better, which makes the pass defense better. The pass defense already has 2 solid CBs in Tillman and Vasher who take some of the pressure off of the safeties, when they are healthy. The Bears haven't had an elite safety in the last 3 years, yet 2 of the 3 years they have been a good-to-great team. Last year, they had the worst DT play they've had in years and didn't perform.
