Peter Gammons of ESPN reports that the Red Sox have agreed to terms with first baseman Sean Casey on a one-year, $700,000 contract.

Casey must not have had many offers, because he has zero chance of getting significant playing time unless David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell suffers a major injury. He'll serve as Boston's backup at first base and designated hitter, and give them a high-average bat off the bench.

If someone wants to give me $700K to practice baseball, watch games, and play every now and again, please feel free.

Pretty good seats, I might add. Heck, for that, I'd probably let Big Papi spit his sunflower seeds into my hands.

I'd even serve coffee and tea to the team. To hell with playing the game. $700K? Where do I sign???

Having a great personality is apparently worth $700k.

<------ Personality is worth quite a bit more than that, but BigbadB would probably settle for that much.

There, not only a great personality, but BBB can also speak in third person ala Rickey Henderson.

I don't want to ruin the ever endless sarcasm party, but I think he helps out Boston as a LH bat off the bench. Very good OBP guy.

He'd be the best bench player on the Cubs right now.

Not exactly. Daryle Ward is a lot better than Casey. They aren't even in the same ballpark. Murton is also probably a better bench player, although that one is a lot closer.

How are we comparing Ward to Casey? Casey has had twice the career of Ward.

I forgot Murton was still on the team, or assuming he wouldn't be.

Casey has been declining the last 3 years and has never been a bench player.

Ward has been the best pinch hitter in the entire league the last two years, putting up a .926 OPS and a 963 OPS respectively.

If you were signing one to be a bench player, you would choose Casey? I certainly wouldn't. I would pick the one who has had recent success in that role rather than the guy who has continued to decline.

I like Ward, maybe I would pick him. But his past two years have only been a little over 200 AB, I hope he can continue. But it isn't like he has a prolonged history to point to.

I think in that limited amount of AB Casey can still be effective.

Sean Casey career line 301/366/450. Not bad for a bench player. Also if he see's any time at first base he's pretty darn good with the glove. He had 184 bad at-bats with Detroit in 06. Calling that A decline is a bit of a stretch. He had a 353 OBP last year. Casey has put up his numbers over the span of his career. Ward was good in 06 and great in 07. For the Red Sox having a guy that can play some defense in the late innings on get on base for the big bats is a plus for what might be the 25th man on there roster. Hendry signing Ward last offseason wasn't welcomed with open arms it was viewed as Hendry buying high again after a guy has one big season. Would I take Ward over Casey right now for what the Cubs need? No. But this was another shrewd signing by Theo.

Yeah, I don't see him getting many at bats barring an injury, but he is a good player to have on the bench.

I would take Ward over Casey, in the simple fact that Casey is a 1st baseman/DH and that's it. Atleast in a pinch, Ward could play some LF/RF. (Note: I said in a pinch) Casey brings a nice BA/OBP, but Ward in my opinion, brings more power for the late inning. So, yeah, I prolly would take Ward over Casey.

With that said, this is a decent (not shrewd) signing by Theo. Getting Ortiz for nothing....shrewd...signing Casey off the scrap heat, not screwed, but a decent signing.

well if he were still hitting like that, he wouldn't be a bench player. his numbers haven't really been close to his previous production the last two years.
