The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.

Damn. Wish the Red Sox (preferably) or Yanks had gotten him.

I'm glad neither team got him, or we would be hearing about Johan Santana, as much as we are hearing about Tom Brady.

The Mets getting Santana---at a VERY steep, but worth, IMO---doesn't really affect us, so I am not really concerned about it.

Kevin Mulvey = Back of the rotation kind of guy.

Deolis Guerra = good fast/change combo. #3 more than likely, possible #2.

Carlos Gomez = defensive CF with tools but can't hit.

Philip Humber = Plus curve, average other offerings. Back of the rotation guy.

Just wait till we waste a couple Zambrano gems in games 1 and 5 of the NLCS because we got shut down by Santana.

How does it not affect us? Assuming we even got that far, how would you like facing Santana 3 times in a 7 game NLCS?

I just saw this...let's hear about the four guys the Mets are giving up from someone who knows a lot more than me.

Carlos Gomez: 21 year old OF, has hit .278 in 4 years in the minors.

Phil Humber: 24 year old P, 18-19, 4.11 ERA in 4 years in the minors....3 year starting pitcher for Rice in college

Deolis Guerra: 18 year old SP, 9-14, 3.28 ERA in 2 seasons in the minors

Kevin Mulvey: 22 year old SP out of Villenova....12-11, 3.02 ERA in 2 seasons in the minors.

Maybe this will force Hendry into an arms race with the Mets ala Red Sox/Yanks. So he trades for Bedard w/o giving up Hill. Ill take that ;)

Funny, the offers being thrown around by the Ms for Bedard is better...then again they're not spending 110m over 5 years though

Ok, so it seems more like a bunch of names that talent to me. Guerra looks to have the highest potential out of the bunch from what I have read and looked at so far.

Guerra does have the ceiling to be a #1 if he ever got that curveball.

I can't believe the Twins didn't get Fernando Martinez out of this trade at least. Awful, it sounded like the Red Sox were offering more a few months ago in those rumored trades.

that's the biggest surprise.

seriously, phil humber? what is this, 2005?

I think these are the 4 that were mentioned yesterday when I posted about the update on MN radio. I'm sure part of it was wanting him in another division.

I think Carlos Gomez and Guerra were the two highly ranked prospects. Both came into the minors as 16/17 year olds, so still unsure what upside. Humber was mentioned as a #3 at best, but Guerra supposedly was the one that made the deal happen.

For the Twins sake I hope this trade works out for them. To trade your top pithcer away for peanuts and a possible #1 who is 18 right now seems pretty idiotic.

USA Today believes the Mets have landed Johan Santana from the Twins for Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber.

It's a pretty disappointing day for Twins fans. Both packages being discussed by the Red Sox and Yankees during the winter meetings seemed more attractive to us. Gomez and Guerra are big-time talents, but Gomez lacks plate discipline and might not fit in the top half of the lineup and an awful lot could go wrong before Guerra even sniffy the majors. Mulvey and Humber are third starters at best and probably more like fourths. It's a whole lot better than losing Santana for draft picks next winter, but we'd have taken a Phil Hughes or Jacoby Ellsbury package over this.
