I can't believe the Angels didn't get involved. They could have easily beaten this offer from the Mets. Maybe it is true that the Twins didn't want him in the AL.

I doubt the Angels would have signed Santana to what he wanted. They are pretty hesitant in giving out huge deals like that.

Then why the heck did they sign GMJ last yr to a $10 mill per yr deal, and Torii Hunter to a deal of $18 mill per? They could've afforded Santana (in terms of prospects and money) had they not blown their money on two players that are not worth a combine $28 mill per yr. It is the Angels OWN fault that they couldn't land Santana.

I'm sure they could have found a way to make it work. My guess is they would have spent a lot of time trying to deal GMJ sooner rather than later.

I thought Santana came out and said he would only waive his NTC to go to an east coast team.

There's the reason why no LAA, LAD, SEA, etc. Heck if Santana was an option, you'd have thought the M's would be thrilled to avoid having to deal with BAL for Bedard.

The Score is reporting that Santana wants 6 years 150 million from the Mets in order to waive his no-trade. That's some serious dough!

6 years 120, I'd do if the finances where available, but 150 million seems a tall order. Maybe he doesn't like the Mets either! LOL!

BTW, The Cubs will no longer be the favorite in Vegas if this trade goes through. Mets are 2/1 favorites to win the NL if Santana is acquired.

Sounds like the trade is no sure thing in light of the cash he wants. If I were the Mets I'd give it to him. New ballpark opens in 09' (or is 2010?) and attendance (not always great at Shea) and revenue will go up accordingly; good young nucleus in Wright and Reyes means that you are never too many moves away from contention.

That's insane. I'd give him 5/107.5...no more.

I think it will probably get done. They have until 4PM CST tomorrow to come to an agreement. I fully expect they will, but I don't think it will be 150 million over 6 years. It will probably be closer to 120. Santana will lower as the hours tick away.

Yanks & Red Sox are in total agreement. "Offer him less than he'll take, and stand firm!" (then gobble him up when he nixes the trade and hits the market again)

25 million for a pitcher? I'll probably be 6/110 when it's all said and done.

I don't know why Santana would agree to 6/110. Some team will be desperate enough and pay more for him next year.

I always thought the BoSox interest in Santana was just in order to jack up the price for the Yanks to cripple them in the long run. Boston had the better team and the marginal wins that Santana would have supplied them would not have been worth much. But I guess the Yanks must have also had the same thought and just been trying to drive up the price for the BoSox if they really turned down a Melky/Kennedy package. Or that just wasn't true.

I can see the Yankees or Boston (maybe) paying that much, and if he gets hurt - down year? He'd be crazy to turn that down.

You also have to factor in that he's probably going to get like 25 mil per year for 5 or 6 years. I'm not saying that makes it a bad deal, just that it's a huge element that needs to be accounted for.

Yup, I called this. :-"

Barry Zito(28) 7/$126M plus a $7M buyout if option not picked up. Why would Santana(28) settle for anything less.

Is the 7M in the eighth year for a total of $133M? Even so, Santana's asking for 150 over 6 years. That's 20M more then Zito with less years.

Again, I don't think it will be 150M, but I could see 120. If he goes 7 years I could see 150, but not at 6 years.

Well if they don't get something done pretty quick here the whole deal's going to go bye-bye.

Fun to be a Twins fan:

The Denver Post reports that the Twins contacted Josh Fogg's agent Thursday and "appear serious about adding the veteran right-hander if the Johan Santana deal goes through."

Minnesota will have money to burn without Santana around and the Twins seemingly always bring in a mediocre veteran or two to hold back their youngsters. With Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey soon added to the mix, the Twins have no shortage of rotation options if they're willing to go with a veteran-less rotation.

Josh Fogg would help all those young pitchers come along. He's a poor man's Greg Maddux.
