Byrd for Murton is really bad. You have other options. Either Soriano or Fukudome could play CF in needed against LHP, leaving Murton in one of the corner OF spots.

I understand Murton "currently doesn't have a spot", but that's no reason to give him away for trash like Byrd.

While I don't think at this moment that Byrd is worth Murton (based upon Byrd's horrific-ness during the years prior to last year), I would not be surprised to see him repeat the season he had last year. Jaramillo is, right now, probably one of the most valuable (if not the most valuable) coaches in baseball, and clearly he is able to tap into talent that other coaches cannot reach.

i haven't noticed it elsewhere in the thread, but Byrd's home/road splits are quite drastic.

i know this is similar to the whole Mark Derosa debate last year, and that worked out well, but i think it would be a big mistake to expect that from Byrd. Derosa didn't have the kind of home/road splits that Byrd does in Texas. his numbers also didn't jump up in one season as much as Byrd's did.

Yeah, at least DeRosa was consistent in his career year:

2006 Home - .299/.358/.441/.799

2006 Road - .293/.355/.470/.825

Byrd, on the other hand, is only coming off a career year at home, but not on the road:

2007 Home - .356/.406/.510/.916

2007 Road - .259/.304/.410/.714

Although for Byrd, maybe a .714 OPS on the road is a career year, as well.

I'm pretty sure Fuld could have those numbers.

I would much rather live and die with Soriano in CF, Murton in LF then give Murton away for anything less than a valuable CFer. I just don't understand why a place can't be made for Matt Murton.

Instead of Byrd, expand the trade discussion with the Padres to get Greene and Hairston. Obviously, unless a third team is involved, the offer would start with Murton and Cedeno. Hairston would become the 4th OF and could cover all three positions.

ZIPS has Fuld at .261/.329/.377/.706

Now give him a year with Rudy...

I'd still take that over Byrd.

I'd much rather keep Murton and sign Lofton. Either trade Pie for a SS upgrade (Greene) or SP (with spare parts for Bedard, Burnett, etc.) and make Fuld be the backup, or have Pie and Lofton battle for CF time and let Fuld build up some trade value in AAA. I see no problem with keeping Murton as a great inusrance policy/top tier 4th OF unless an offer blows us away.

Byrd talk: Outfielder Marlon Byrd, named the Harold McKinney Good Guy of the Year winner, acknowledged he's been informed the Chicago Cubs have expressed interest in him.

The Cubs are seeking a right-handed hitting center fielder or possibly a full-time center fielder if they have to include outfielder Felix Pie in a deal with Baltimore to possibly get lefty Erik Bedard and second baseman Brian Roberts.

The Rangers have reportedly turned down an offer of outfielder Matt Murton for Byrd and would not be willing to revisit the deal unless Chicago adds at least one or two young pitching prospects.

What? You're saying the good guy of the year award winner is worth less than a player who's younger and better than him and two pitching prospects? Who would have known...

You won't be laughing when Hendry does it.

They want a pitching prospect? Offer them Murton and Paul Shappert and call it a deal.

At least people still think the Cubs are going after Roberts AND Bedard.

Well, if reports are true that Hendry was trying to acquire Byrd, wouldn't that make you think Pie could be on the move? The only way I see him being moved is indeed a trade for Roberts and Bedard.

EDIT: It's hard to say who's telling the truth and who's not, but I believe they are still going for both.

The Dallas Morning News believes the Rangers turned down an offer of Matt Murton for Marlon Byrd.

Murton is the better bet of the two going forward, but it's still no surprise that the Rangers declined the offer. They'll reconsider if the Cubs add a quality pitching prospect to the deal (possibly Sean Marshall or Sean Gallagher). Murton is also rumored in deals with the Padres.

So Murton is going to be better in the future than Byrd, but its not surprise they declined it.

Oh yea, and if we trade Murton and Gallagher for Byrd my head will explode.

Why is Byrd even being considered? Career year in the best hitters park in the American League even though it was not that impressive of a career year? Well, he sure must be primed for a Pujolsian year in 2008, let's get him, and give up someone waaaaaaay better for him, along with a pitcher who also has more value than him.

This is why I cringe whenever I read someone say they are bored and just want something -- anything -- to happen. My biggest fear is waking up one morning and hearing Murton + Gallagher for Byrd + mid-level prospect is a done deal.

I'm hoping Hendry respond to the Murton/Gallagher for Byrd suggestion, by adding Brandon McCarthy into the deal. I know, I know, McCarthy hasn't done much in the majors, but I think his potential and upside---especially coming to the NL---would be worth the gamble of Gallagher.

Nonetheless, I don't expect the Byrd deal to happen.

According to MLB.com, the Rangers are unlikely to pull the trigger on a Marlon Byrd deal with the Cubs.

The Rangers want the Cubs to include a pitcher with Matt Murton, something the Cubs are unwilling to do. We look at Murton as the more valuable player of the two, but the Rangers obviously disagree, even though it would have been a no-brainer for them a year ago.
