Where are the actual quotes again? You know..the ones you could prove that Hendry actually said? I wouldn't want to go to court with such a lame attempt to disparage Hendry. :^o

Hendry avoids actually going on sports radio and taking questions from fans, because he can't defend his lousy record. Kenny Williams does, but then he's got a recent WS ring to show his fan base. Chad Fox, Steve Trachsel, Jerome Williams, Jason Marquis, Neifi Perez, Latroy Hawkins, etc... Good job, Jim.

That isn't entirely true...he does go on sports radio, but often yes questions are softballed to him. As for KW and his WS ring, that is 3 years ago and really meaningless at this point.

Matt Clement, Jeremy Giambi, Willi Mo Pena, Julio Lugo, Coco Crisp, Chad Bradford. Oh wait, we're listing Jim Hendry's bad moves, not Theo Epsteins. My bad.

I have NEVER heard Hendry go on the air and take direct questions from fans. You're right, when he appears on WGN Radio, Kaplan asks fans to email questions-filters out the more controversial ones and then asks the obvious ones. How about a little give and take with the people who pay your salary, Jim?

Kenny Williams at least has a plan. Funny that Jim Thome came to Wrigley and Hendry barely talked to him. Williams snapped him up pretty fast.

Look I am no huge fan of Hendry, but you aren't giving him enough credit. Kenny Williams does have a plan. It just almost always backfires. Your counter argument will be that the one time it worked they won a World Series, and your right. But that was just a needle in a haystack. Can you look at that 2005 team and tell me that you thought they'd make the playoffs much less win a World Series. His plan last year was to acquire a bunch of unproven flame throwing arms for the bullpen. How did that work out? Laughable. His plan this year was to target the top 4-5 FA outfielders out there. How did that work out? Instead he was stuck trading 2 of their top prospects for his slugger, a move that wasn't bad at all but still damaged his already bad farm system.

Trust me, I know Hendry is no better. We've often joked about his plan being to copy the model of the previous World Series winners, or acquiring a million weak hitting 2B, or signing relievers to high priced deals. Your right hes not a great GM. But to compare him to Kenny Williams and say that Jim Hendry isn't at least a good a GM as Kenny, its ridiculous. Kenny joined the Sox in 2000 and managed to ruin one of the most promising young teams in recent memory. He has made the playoffs once since, the flukey 2005 title team. While Hendry has his mistakes, he turned around a bad 2002 team into the team that had the Cubs closer to a title than ever before. (I will agree that like Kenny's 2005 team, it was a bit of a fluke, and was carried by the pitching staff that was already there when he took over - even though he scouted and developed a lot of those players), then managed to dismantle it when he realized it had serious flaws and has manged to rebuild it into another team. Anyways, I'm rambling, but my point is, don't use Kenny Williams to compare favorably as a GM to Hendry.

Jim Thome grew up a Cubs fan and wanted to play for the team but the Cubs had other plans. By the way, what have the sox won since they acquired Thome? Also, you apparently don't really listen to sports radio in Chicago because Williams hasn't fielded questions on The score (the home of the Sox) or ESPN AM 1000 (the former flagship) almost two years. Hendry took questions from fans last season on Mike Murphy's show and he also did it on the Mike North show. At least be truthful.

Oh yeah, the sox plan is to try to win more than 72 games and stay above the Royals.

It's tough to disparage Kenny Williams when he has a championship and Hendry doesn't. Hendry may think of himself as a straight shooter, but doing that results in overpaying.

It's really easy in my book. Kenny Williams comes off as an arrogant loud-mouth. His players won a championship but 2005 looks very much like a fluke right now. Good GMs build teams that are consistently in contention (which is why I contend that people give him too much credit).

The topic was Hendry. Bringing up Williams adds nothing to the discussion.

Wonderful, wonderful read! I can't believe Farnsworth hadn't discovered beer and that other thing until he got to the majors!

Can you imagine how high strung he must have been before that. I would have hated to have had to room with him in the minors.

The part regarding the Ted Lilly signing was great.

Kenny's secret plan for '08: Finish in 4th place.

It's tough to disparage Joe Garigiola Jr. when he has a ring and Hendry doesn't.

No wait, Garigiola was an idiot.

And you can counter it...how?

I don't buy it either, that's not his personality.

I buy it. He was there, he's even got a cell phone pick of Hendry up close talking to a group of people around him. Even with Kap Hendry was saying "The hell with" this and that. I'd say he'd have a dirty mouth when he's not being listened to by thousands of people.

I'm sure he has a foul mouth, majority of baseball does.

That's different than speaking to a group of people and bashing players, I've seen him one on one and I've seen him speak to a group of people and from what I've gathered, he would not say those things about players.

I could get him with a picture of him in a hotel lobby, hell I sat next to him at the lounge in the Hotel Nikko in SF after the come from behind win last Summer.

it's sorta surprising this is true, but then again, my dad goes to the weekly JoePa luncheons and he says some pretty candid stuff as well (knowing none of it will go to the media)

It was a very fair portrayal of Hendry. And, if anything, it might have been slightly flattering.

very good read. Man, crazy about the story of Hendry going to the 2nd hospital. As far as Prior is concerned, it was pretty obvious Hendry was fair with Prior and Prior didn't want any part of the Cubs anymore.

Yours seems to be the majority opinion around here, but I completely side with Prior. I'd feel no loyalty to an organization that signed the guy who shredded my arm and cost me millions in future earnings.

FWIW, the exploratory surgery before last season pretty much ruled out the Giles collision as the cause of Prior's problems, so it's a little disheartening to hear that Hendry still believes it was a significant factor. Some teams have medical staffs that minimize the impact of injuries. The Cubs aren't one of those teams.

Very descriptive blogger with a lot of information versus this post with two sentences. Unless you have anything to back up your claim, I'm gonna go ahead and continue to assume that it's true.
