If I didn't have good memories of Lieber during his first stint with the Cubs, I would think this is a horrible signing.

Hopefully this works out as well as the "Trachsel comes back to the Cubs" deal.

Clement would've been a better signing as far as "returns" go.

Lieber is still quite average. This is an excellent signing.

He was quite average 3 years ago. Now he's injury prone and bad.

My god some people overreact on here to a contract that will have little or no effect on the team as it will probably enable Hendry to deal Marquis or Dempster and $3.5 mill isn't going to affect whether we can make a deal at the deadline. Lieber has a chance to be league average which is a hell of alot more than i can say for Dempster. If it doesn't work out you have Gallagher , Marshall or Hart to try and plug the gap. It may also pull the wool over a few Gms eyes in that we are dealing from a position of strength and they may stop asking such ridiculous prices. What about this for a rotation if possible, shift Marquis and Dempster then give the Twins Pie,Veal,Gallagher,Ceda for Santana you end up with

Santana

Zambrano

Lilly

Hill

Lieber/Hart

I like Lieber over Dempster but I would have had Marshall or Gallagher over the both of them.

Same here. Right now I'd rank our 4-5s as Gallagher, Lieber, Marshall, Marquis, Hart, Dempster.

Looks like its a 1 year deal. Probably for like 4 million a year, 6 at the most?

Would everyone take Lieber over Marquis? Ok then why did Marquis get 3/24?

You'd think a pitcher with horrible mechanics coming off a torn labrum is a better bet to perform well?

A, becuase Jim Hendry is a bad GM, and B, because Jason Marquis is actually a decent bet to finish three straight seasons actually pitching.

Lieber is a fatty who is old and can't stay healthy. He's shown no interest in maintaining his body with age, so nobody is going to interested in giving him money to flop around on the mound and hit the DL because his body can't handle his weight.

This is a good signing. It can mean many things, least of which we have competition for the #5 spot. Competition is very good. Also, the bullpen gets more depth - or the potential of more depth if Dempster doesn't work out in the rotation, or if he isn't needed there.

Have the people hammering this deal even looked at what Lieber's done lately?

very very little

When healthy he's been perfectly average.

Blah, blah, blah.

He's not healthy, hasn't been in years. There's no reason to think he can stay healthy. You have to do 2 things to earn your money as a pitcher, actually pitch, and pitch well. We don't know if he'll pitch well, but we can be fairly certain he won't actually pitch all year.

dempster makes me mad and gives me an upset stomach...but if you want to call that depth...i am cool with that

Hopefully this one works out better than Greg Maddux's homecoming

Maddux' numbers would look pretty good about now.

There's no reason to think Marquis can pitch well in the 2nd half so maybe we can pitch lieber after the ASB when Marquis implodes and starts throwing BP.

Nah, do you remember how bad Maddux was for us right before we got rid of him? Isn't he still making over 10mil? No thanks, he's had a lot of help playing in large stadiums.
