To platoon with Pie. Figured we could talk about it here since the other thread is about Roberts.

Byrd put up a very nice .307/.355/.459 .814 OPS line last year, with a .826 OPS against lefties and a .809 OPS against righties. Problem is, it was a fluke year in terms of slugging.

Count me in on this mini bandwagon, assuming we aren't giving up anything crazy.

I could totally see this being some terrible Sean Marshall-Marlon Byrd swap.

Dear Lord no

I could live with Byrd, but I don't want to trade much of value to get him.

Just to clarify: Levine actually said that Baltimore hasn't decided what to do and that Roberts is currently unavailable (splitting hairs I know)- BTW he also mentioned that he believes the Indians have a better offer on the table (centering around Adam Miller, the Indians top pitching prospect) for Roberts then do we- so even if they do decide to deal him it's more likely he'll go there then here.

However, he never said we have talked to the Rangers about Byrd, only that he has heard Byrd is available for another OF and that he would fit what Hendry is looking for.

Lastly- he flat out did not say the Cubs are really trying to sign Lieber; he said that now that the Roberts deal seems to be a no-go Hendry will likely move onto adding a pitcher and OF then went on to mention Byrd- after that he mentioned that Liebers agent said that he (Lieber) would like to come back to the Cubs, not that we are actively pursuing him.

If we trade anything of value, we are stupid. Byrd is at best a #4 outfielder, and a bench player.

If Pie didn't work out, I'd rather see us give Colvin a shot than Byrd.

This is making me long for Jacque Jones. Sad.

Colvin is ridiculously far off from being major league ready.

In your opinion maybe, but in the Cubs opinion, I think they feel the he's close. Obviously the BB:K ratio is the big issue, but I could easily see Colvin as the type who puts up a high BABIP season and bats around .330, therefore raising his OBP naturally so that the Cubs think he's shown some kind of improvement in that area. Not saying I agree, but as we've seen, there can be some pretty wacky numbers when you get to AAA, which might be very soon for Tyler.

I don't want him. His numbers were good last year, but never again anywhere else in his career, and last year he happened to play in one of the most notorious hitters parks in the majors.

Hmmmmmmm... count me out

Im ok with Bryd....Cause no one is guaranteeing that Pie will ever actually happen, but for Marshall thats a terrible trade...like someone mentioned before hes a fourth outfielder who could fit in in a platoon with Pie. Please just trade some no names for him!!!!!!

The Marshall bit was complete speculation on my part. Don't worry about it.

Well im not really, but on there other hand thats sounds like a terrible trade that hendry could do just to try to acquire one need for our team.

I'm having a brain cramp, what is psd?

In this case, it was a poster there who heard Levine's report, and that's what he said.

Byrd isn't bad as a 5th OF to play CF for some lefties, but

2007 Home(TEX) .356/.406/.510

2007 Away .259/.304/.410

2006 Home(WAS) .173/.289/.259

2006 Away .259/.338/.414

2005 Home(WAS) .252/.309/.358

2005 Away .283/.339/.396

...his line for last year is a bit deceiving.

This is why I wasn't particularly pleased with the Angel Pagan trade, because I figured it was a prelude to wasting time chasing someone not any better, and Marlon Byrd probably isn't any better. He's a horrid center fielder. You can pretty easily see us giving up too much. No joke, we would've been better off with Craig Monroe (yes, Craig Monroe) or keeping Angel Pagan than bothering with trading for Byrd.

I'm just hoping that Pie will just put it together and be at least league average at the plate so that we don't have to worry about all these other OF options anymore.

Disagree on Monroe. While the production might be the same or comparable, Monroe was likely going to win big in arbitration and that wasn't a gamble worth risking. The Cubs made a good move in getting rid of Monroe.
