I wasn't sure what to think about this guy because he only had one good year in the minors, but wow. Good job Cubs. Has there been any sort of physical connection attributed to his success? Add weight, drop weight, or was it just one of those things where he just clicked and started raking?

I do recall that he dropped a good amount of weight and tweaked his hitting mechanics prior to last season, but other than that it's just a young man developing as a hitter in his mid-20's.

he dropped somewhere around 35 pounds before the start of last season

They were talking about helping Soto go to right more often this year, has he done that or is he hitting in the same area as last year?

i think he is still pulling the ball a lot, but outside pitches he can go up the middle and still drives them deep to center.

I seem to remember him hitting an opposite field HR about 15 seconds after Tim made a post about him pulling everything.

if you look at his wrigley hit chart, he hasn't hit anything anything to the right of the right-center field gap. i guess maybe that's a concern in that teams could start shading him to really pull the ball to left, but he's shown a good ability to drive pitches that are even on the outside corner.

btw i hope the 80% of you who ranked vitters as the cubs' top prospect coming into this year are hanging your heads in shame.

I hope Vitters proves them right, despite Soto maintaining this level of performance.

Soto also has 5-7% LD% greater than these guys too (McCann is at 15%)

Even when he cools off a bit he should remain near the top.

I dont have a problem with Soto not hitting to RF, he hits the ball very had and has good power to make that up. Keep on truckin.

Is he Ryan Braun of '08?

If you add defense and offense, and he keeps up this hitting or anywhere close to it he will far far far far far surpass Braun's 08 campaign.

wow. He really only has one fly ball that's even in the R-CF gap. His other ball hit that direction was a double, just right of dead center. You just don't see the extreme shift for righties like you do for Giambi, etc. I think a team should put all 3 OFs in LF and CF just to see if Soto could poke one into right.

Someone needs to recreate the theme song from Shaft for Soto!

That is one bad mother--

SHUT YO' MOUTH!

I'm only talkin' about Soto!

We can dig it.

I dont have a problem with Soto not hitting to RF, he hits the ball very had and has good power to make that up. Keep on truckin.

Plus he is throwing runners out at a great clip - 40%. He is second or third in the NL with, man this hurts, Jason Kendall ahead of him.

Kendall has been so bad, I wonder if teams are actually trying to steal with guys like Daryl Ward on him, which is contributing to his high percentage...

that was sick. i'm counting it as an inside the park home run, regardless. because He's Geovany Soto, and He proclaimed it thusly. yea verily.

When was the last time the Cubs had a catcher this good? I think it is safe to say that Soto will eclipse Barrett's best season with the club by a mile (.287/.337/.489, 16 HR, 65 RBI in 2004).

Best season for a Cubs catcher ever was Gabby Hartnett in 1930 when he went .339/.404/.630, 37 HR, 122 RBI. I think it's unlikely that Soto will do anything like that, but Soto already might be the best catcher the Cubs have had since Hartnett.
