We'll see. Obviously the guy wants to pitch in SD, so the Padres would have been crazy not to throw a million at him to see if he can possibly come back.

All the other "I'll be back in May" and "We're real excited Mark is a Padre!!" talk is just meaningless window dressing. It's about a pitcher who just had major shoulder surgery needing to prove he can get his velocity back, or else his career is over. The Padres think that's worth a million to find out -- so do I. It's chump change.

Really OMC? We're gonna count strained shoulder in ST '06, shoulder tendinitis in late summer '06, and shoulder surgery in ST '07 as 3 separate injuries?

No, just one chronic injury that never seems to heal.

Easy there killer... I don't get why so many people take it to heart because you don't like a player..It's not like it's your family member or someone you know..There's probabaly tons of players I like that get ripped on all the time..I could care less..It's your choice..This already reminds me of the Murton thing all over again when you would think Murton is some of these guys relatives..Get over it..No one is going to like the samething as everyone else..Even if their is negativity towards the player..There's no reason to say things like that towards someone over a freakin ballplayer..

Nor is there any reason to say things like that about a ballplayer.

No one is getting defensive because some people don't like Prior. People are taking exception to the lack of class/maturity in the way some present their dislike for him. Two completely different things.

And people need to stop exaggerating the level of support Murton gets. Saying he deserves a shot to start or thinking he has a chance to be a quality ballplayer does not equal thinking he's a Hall of Fame candidate.

I agree with the bolded portions, but I think that it is hypocritical to take this position if you (not "you" grassbass, but "you" in general) are one of the many here who see no problem with engaging in ad hominem attacks on Hendry (weight) and others. I also think some folks are in fact getting defensive b/c people disagree with them. For example, I just read that certain (unnamed) people are "dumb", presumeably because they do not agree that the Cubs did not in fact make a reasonable offer to Prior.

We are debating who is dumber?

Sportswriters not named Bruce Miles.

I win.

I'd say that's more laziness, though. If fans buy whatever popular columnists say, what's their incentive to put energy into research?

An unvitation from ESPN?

I must say that whoever took the several minute towel drill pre-warmup and turned it into throwing towels to build up arm strength while recovering from injuries was either oozing with ignorance or made a pretty smart move. Listeners and readers still eat that up.

Of course, the answer is the first scenario, but you never know.

I find it interesting this thread is only 4 pages long 24 hrs. after the story broke. I know it's the off season but a story like this usually goes 20 pages by this time. It just shows how much Cub fans are sick of the Mark Prior drama.

Woah, Hey, Hoah!

How did my picture get on the internet? I don't remember posing for that one.

I doubt the Cubs win a tampering suit, either. Prior put himself out there to other teams just long enough to make it look good. I think there's a lot of tampering that goes on behind closed doors, so I don't expect anything to come from this one. Too bad they didn't have Vegas odds on Prior's destination, because I was THAT sure he'd end up in San Diego.

Also, I believe Hendry and Towers have a pretty good relationship. He probably wouldn't want to ruin that unless there was going to be some sort of gain, which there obviously will not be if he files the charges.

I for one, will miss Mark Prior. I wish him good luck. I hope he wins a couple Cy Young awards.

I'll miss Mark too, especially the guy we saw in 03'. I just don't think he has it any longer. Its a damn shame - the dreams of just a few years ago have been blown to pieces.

He's had a lot of down time. I'm not sure how well he can come back. How many pitchers have been injured or out of the game as much as Prior and proceeded to be the same pitcher when they returned?

Bret Saberhagen missed significant time and he found a little bit of success when he came back.

Prior is younger, so he has that going for him.

If Prior's delivery is what is giving him all the injury trouble, and if he adjusts his delivery, does he lose a little bit or a lot off his command and movement?

For those that don't like comparing Wade Miller, that's fair enough. But, where is Wade Miller now? He's not a perfect comparison, but the guy was putting up pretty respectable numbers during the heighth of the steroid era. He's certainly not Prior, but Miller may be completely done.

Let's look at a couple more guys who weren't projected as high as Prior (it's hard to find a really good comparison for Prior's injury history), but the Cubs took a flyer on Mike Sirotka also. Completely out of baseball now.

Kip Wells hasn't really deserved any chances at the major league level since his injuries started. He's been horrible. The only reason he's getting any opportunities is because of his name and how good he looked for two decent years.

Someone sewed a bionic arm on Chris Carpenter. He came back better than he ever was. But, what are the chances he ends up doing that again?

Mark Mulder looks like he's done.

How many REAL success stories can be listed for guys after they have gone under the knife? And I'm not referring to limited periods of time of success like Kerry Wood or Chris Carpenter. I'm talking about Prior putting all of his injury problems behind him and going back to being the dominant pitcher he was pre-injury.

What are the odds of that actually happening? Not that I want to see him fail. I most certainly put a lot of the blame for his injuries on Dusty Baker. Prior was a real treat to watch pitch.

i hope he goes 33-0 with a 0.02 ERA

yeah, like he'd actually give up a run

He has a better chance of only giving up one run than pitching the 450 innings necessary to have a 0.02 ERA.

Trip B, Jose Rijo took about 5 years off and came back adn pitched well(briefly) He was a lot older than Prior. It's not the time off that worries me, it's whether his shoulder is just done for.

I once again feel the need to reiterate(I lost count of how many times I have) that this is the 1st surgery Prior has had Prior has not had his injuries taken care of then he comes back with something new. It's why I took issue with OMC's listings of injuries. That was a shoulder injury that was never taken care of in ST, got to be too much to pitch with by the summer, then surprise was still hurting by ST after it wasn't taken care of. Is an injury considered chronic when you never did anything to address the injury in the first place?
