If it makes any of you feel better, I had to turn on my heater for the first time this since last winter. I think it got down to around 42 last night.

Yes, that makes me feel so much better after hearing about yet another round of freezing rain, snow, and sleet that's making its way through here tonight and all day tomorrow. Thanks for finally putting that smile back on my face.

Well I had to scrape ice off my windshield twice in the past week before work. Is that better?

Dude, you need to move.

I'm guessing if I left for work after the sun rose, this wouldn't be an issue.

Anything to make you feel better, Bob-o.

(Again, I'd like to point out I really love winter weather and am jealous of you folks in the upper Midwest. It's just fun to mock Bob-o.)

My mom lives in San Diego and I spent Christmases there growing up as a kid. It makes headlines when the temperature gets below freezing (those poor orange trees!!). But that is to say it can get a little chilly. Still, 60s during the day in December isn't all that bad. It is odd that most houses there don't have basements (and are generally just not constructed as solidly as in the midwest). I don't know if I'd dig the water problems and wildfires, but otherwise San Diego is pretty much perfect (except for the sports teams :D ).

Basements can be a bit of a problem during an earthquake. And there is very little tornado threat too.

Post of the year.

Actually no, but close.

Any news on K-Fuk?

Wait, I'm a bit confused.

I was under the impression that Kevin Towers said something about expecting to hear back from Fukudome soon... but reading some of these posts, I get the impression that the offer comes off the table today. Am I just reading too much into this?

haha actually there are basements in s. cal, but they tend to be very expensive to construct due to earthquakes, and generally why most houses have crawl spaces and walls on knee walls.

Its a little past 6AM in Japan right now..Kosuke should we waking up right now, getting some coffee, and then be on the phone rejecting the Padres offer..

I know nothing "breaking" ever comes out of MLB.com, but they just posted an article about a half hour ago regarding Fukudome. Here are some excerpts:

As agent Joe Urbon said, Fukudome "has enough information to make a decision."

The two Chicago clubs are prepared to clash big-time over Fukudome -- unless the Padres beat them to the punch. San Diego has reportedly made an offer that would make him the club's highest-priced free-agent import ever, but if the rumblings out of Chicago's North Side are accurate, that might not be close to being sufficient.

While Fukudome, typical of Japanese players, has been rumored to be favoring a West Coast club, Urbon told the San Diego Union-Tribune that geography would become a factor only as a tiebreaker in comparable contract offers.

The Padres made a bid in excess of the top Japanese offer rejected by Fukudome -- a four-year, $30 million pitch by the Yomiuri Giants

The Sun Times just posted this article 10 minutes ago: Cubs Waiting On Kosuke Fukudome

Here are two clips:

The Cubs, who are still considered the front-runners for the star outfielder, had been in contact with the player’s agent today, but as of early afternoon said they hadn’t been given a specific time frame for Fukudome’s formal announcement that he’ll play in the U.S. next season, much less where.

...

Agent Joe Urbon has said repeatedly that once Fukudome announces he’s coming to the U.S., a deal could be reached quickly. Indications are that such a deal could be reached within the same day as an announcement.

Still not much new - except that it says the cubs have talked to his agent today

Aaaand now ESPN just posted this:

Fukudome to decide tonight...

Free agent outfielder Kosuke Fukudome plans to announce late Monday night U.S. time whether he will play in Japan in 2008 or pursue one of several offers from Major League Baseball clubs, his agent told ESPN.com.

...

"If the report was accurate, you would have seen quotes from the player or the [Yomiuri] club," Urbon said. "He hasn't made up his mind yet. When he does make up his mind, the first point of communication will be to the clubs in Japan."

San Diego is trying to sell its Pacific Rim geography as well as the city’s natural beauty and less media/fan-pressured culture as part of its bid, but Urbon told the Union-Tribune Sunday night that the contract offers must be ``fairly even’’ before geography becomes an factor.

Guess he has to sell that instead of telling him he'll basically be playing a cemetary with 25 people in the stands sleeping.

This is idiotic. Make your damn mind up already.

This article says the Japanese team has given up on their effort to land Fukudome:

Daily Yomiuri Online

On Monday, the Giants also announced they had given up on pursuing free agent outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, who is set on a career in the majors.
