Jason Bay-OF-Pirates Dec. 2 - 12:18 am et

Baseball insiders told the Boston Herald that talks between the Pirates and Indians regarding Jason Bay have heated up.

Kelly Shoppach apparently would be involved in the deal, but his was the only name the Herald had. Other possibilities include outfielder Trevor Crowe, third baseman Andy Marte and top pitching prospects Adam Miller and Chuck Lofrgen. Perhaps the Pirates would also be interested in Josh Barfield if they thought Freddy Sanchez would bring in a top prospect or two.

it seems like Shoppach has been involved in every MLB trade that's happened in the last 2 years

I was going to say the same thing about Marte.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette suggests that "it seems a long shot that the Pirates will trade Jason Bay."

The newspaper speculates that the Pirates would avoiding dealing Bay when his value is at its lowest point following a poor season. On the other hand, the Boston Herald reported Sunday that the Indians are heavily pursuing Bay.

ESPN's Steve Phillips believes the Pirates are looking at Cliff Lee and Kelly Shoppach from the Indians as a potential return for Jason Bay.

That'd be quite a Christmas present from Pirates GM Neal Huntington to his old boss in Cleveland. Even with a new regime in place, the Pirates still appear to feel like they can never have enough left-handed starting pitchers. Lee would join Tom Gorzelanny, Paul Maholm and Zach Duke in the Pittsburgh rotation, seemingly opening up the door for either Ian Snell or Matt Morris to get traded.

Do we have anything that would compete with that deal? I guess Lee would be similar to Marshall perhaps and is Shoppach's value a lot higher than Pie's?

BUMP

Looks like Bay could be headed west:

Frustrated in their attempts to land outfielders this offseason, the San Diego Padres are deep into discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates about a multiplayer deal that would be centered around All-Star outfielder Jason Bay.

The Padres still have some financial flexibility, after trying and failing to sign Andruw Jones and Kosuke Fukodome, and they have some prospects to deal, such as infielder Chase Headley, a second-round pick from the 2005 draft. San Diego may also consider dealing catcher Michael Barrett, who surprised the Padres last week by accepting their offer of arbitration -- an offer that the Padres made with the hope of recouping a draft pick

Was he injured last year? His number were very unBay-like.

Jason Bay's a guy who mysteriously improved drastically after leaving the strict drug testing of the minor leagues. His career path looks like Bobby Higginson's so far. I'd still like to see what it'd take to bring him in.

Chase Headley is interesting. Matt Antonelli won't be offered in any trades. After that, they really don't have much to offer.

Of course, the Cubs "could" help.

Bay to San Diego

Greene to Cubs

good young players from Cubs to Pirates.

The Pads would have to throw in a young player as well - Bay for Greene isn't an even deal.

If it's something like:

Bay to San Diego

Greene to Cubs

Pirates get: Headley or Cedric Hunter from Padres; Marshall, Murton and some mid-level pitching prospect like Petrick, Atkins or Holliman... maybe Veal if that's who they wanted.

that's a pretty good framework for deal.

Depending on the young players, this could make sense for everyone.

padres really end up without a SS under this deal. maybe the cubs throw in Theriot/Cedeno (SD picks which one they want) and the Padres ship a mid-level prospect to the Cubs as part of the deal.

i'm normally not one to make up multi-team trades, but this one actually makes a lot of sense.

Padres can give Eckstein the 2nd or 3rd biggest contract offer in team history.

if one of the other two california GMs were the GM of the padres, i'd say that this would be very possible.

Cubs get: Khalil Greene, Damaso Marte

Padres get: Jason Bay, Ryan Theriot

Pirates get: Chase Headley, Michael Barrett, Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, and Padres P prospect.

You can probably subtract Marshall, its not like the Pirates need 7 lefties in their rotation.

Padres probably ask for a little more, but that seems like a good trade.
