I vote for locking this thread but I'd also like to see transactions renamed Cubs set to acquire Brian Roberts or something along those lines.

Yes, that is a ripoff of the Pedro for Delino forum at Dodgerblues.com

Did anyone else with dyslexia read that as "MacPhail is dead"?

I did. Also, count me in on the population that thinks it's probably for the best a trade didn't happen. Let's see where we stand come All-Star break. And please trade one of Dempster or Marquis.

i would just like to say that it would be completely idiotic for the o's to not trade brian roberts. he's not a big enough star to be a big draw at the gates. he's productive for the price that he's getting paid, and is not over the hill, so he would bring some pretty good value in a trade. and the o's are a horrible team in a division with the two highest payrolls in baseball, plus a pretty good toronto team and rapidly-improving tampa. they are going absolutely nowhere with roberts; best thing to do is put him on the table and take the best offer you get.

I'm not sure about your first point. Baltimore fans seem to love him. He is a flashy leadoff hitter that steals bases, plays the game "the right way", and is a big community guy. That's a big draw to bring in the casual fan in any market.

As far as trade value, I agree completely. I think his trade value will only get down because he'll be getting closer to the end of his contract, and then the Orioles won't be able to re-sign him in 2 years. The only reason to keep him is to placate the fans for the next couple years.

he's the most popular player on the team, but if people are going to orioles games at this point, at least 95% of them are going to see professional baseball players play a baseball game, and because they like sitting outside watching baseball. roberts will sell some tickets, but not enough to keep him around. the best thing the orioles can do for their fans (aside from exiling the owner to the moon) is not keep around a good, "scrappy" second baseman, but get a good return for him and show the fans that you're committed to building a good base from the farm, and then showing some aggressiveness and intuition in the free agent market to replace some of the salary that has been shed.

If we're still following what the "insiders" have to say over at orioleshangout, here's what Belkast had to say about MacPhail's comments:

This is a brillant decision by AM. He wants Pie in the deal. He is using the media as a last ditch attempt to make a deal happen. The pressure is on the Cubs now!

I suspect that Belkast doesn't grasp the meaning of the word "brilliant".

I suspect Belkast is full of it. A stopped clock has a better record than he does. His "guy" is probably the Oriole equivalent to a janitorial Roast -- a workerbee who finds scratch paper in trash bins he's cleaning.

This may just be semantics, but the new title of this thread is kind of inaccurate. MacPhail never said anything is dead. All he said was that a trade is unlikely before opening day.

Belkast has caused much of the trouble this offseason (he was the one who was spearheading the trade is close both times) and he doesn't all the track record built up as much as some of the others either. Even if you put much stock into any of them, I wouldn't put much stock into his source whatsoever.

It amazes me though that Angelos apparently wants a greater haul for Brian Roberts than the Twins got for Johan freaking Santana.

Creating goodwill for future free agent signings as well by showing that he doesn't mind holding a player hostage through a full tilt rebuild.

At least he picked a GM whose name will include his results...

Meh! Getting to 300 was a huge let down. Maybe, just maybe, 500 is the holy grail of everything that is BR.

He got more for Bedard. I think MacPhail proved that his annoying wait-it-out style got him a huge haul for Bedard, and he thinks he can do the same with Roberts. Thing is, Hendry is dumb enough to bite, and MacPhail knows it.

What would happen if every member, even the usual lurkers, (note the post count and member date) posted in this thread? Which would be a more unusual accomplishment, that feat or 500 pages about Brian Roberts and whatever the heck else we feel like posting?
