DEROSA played SS all the way up through the minors in the ATL system. He had no where to play when he got to the bigs because of rentaria and he couldnt move to second because of giles. Derosa had to move to utility player. This was in the VineLine with Fontenot and Theriot on the cover.

Never knew that. I'm totally sold on the idea of Dero at SS.

If Roberts is traded for there almost certainly won't be room for Fontenot anymore.

Renteria didn't block DeRosa in Atlanta. DeRo's last year with the Braves was 2004 and Edgar was in St. Louis at the time. When DeRosa came up, he was blocked by Walt Weiss (his first 2 years) and then Rafael Furcal at short. At second, he was blocked by Keith Lockhart, Quilvio Veras and then Giles.

He was always only a good utility player for the Braves and never was considered starter material until 05 when he went to Texas. He's played 138 career major league games at short and all but 24 of those came with Atlanta.

And his ABs from last year will be DeRosa's ABs this year. :D

Fontenot for Bedard. Straight up.

A guy can dream, can't he?

Hmm, liquor up MacPhail quite a bit and maybe, just maybe you can convince him that Ryno came back as a lefty.

It's a longshot, but it may be our only hope.

LOL, I'm not sure if that's dreaming or evidence of a crack addiction.

If Lou thought DeRosa could play short, he'd already be there rather than Theriot.

To make room for who at 2nd, Fontenot ?

Aquiring Roberts would make Lou think about using De Rosa at SS for sure. If you have Ramirez at 3rb, Lee at 1st and Fukudome in RF there isn't enough playing time there for De Rosa. You would need to sit one the 3 guys i mentioned basically every 3 days to give De Rosa at bats. That ain't happening. This whole De Rosa supersub talk is to keep Theriot happy for the moment. I think De Rosa will be the SS and he should be in my opinion.

dero over riot at SS would be SO much better!

If we play DeRo at SS then the deal is worth it but unfortunately I don't see this staff making that move.

Why not? I would expect Riot to start the season there but I'm willing to bet that by the time May rolls around I'm willing to bet Lou will be looking at Dero for SS. He doesn't put up with consistent sucking when he has options.

are we still talking Gallagher/Murton/Patterson here?

Yes

But according to another of the Famous Orioles Hangouter Insiders, his guy says nothing is imminent. So who the hell knows.

No way this happens, it would have happened by now if it was going to.

I'm so sure that's true. I don't think these rumors are out of left field. I also think the MItchell Report mention and Fuku's press conference could have pushed things back (plus, the O's have other deals they sre juggling).

in fairness to lou, he did move jacque to center and murton to right, something i'm sure dusty never would have done. i wouldn't completely shut out the idea of lou trying derosa at ss. the only problem is, in his mind ryan theriot is a solid mlb shortstop, and he doesn't see that position as a hole on this team.

DeRosa tried ground balls at SS when Izturis and Cedeno were struggling and the consensus still was that Theriot couldn't play SS and yet couldn't stick at SS.

DeRosa and Theriot tried ground balls at the same time. One of them was going to play 2nd, and the other one was going to play SS. Theriot won.

Although Lou did try Fontenot there over DeRosa when Theriot fell out of favor. When Fontenot failed, he went back to Theriot. That's probably the biggest indication of what Lou thinks of DeRosa's ability there.

I'm not following this "marginal upgrade" term.

Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over Mike Fontenot.

Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over Ryan Theriot.

Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over any other bench player.

Brian Roberts is a marginal upgrade over Mark DeRosa.

I have 3 significant upgrades and one marginal. To me, that's significant.

that's quite a reach to count the same guy as three upgrades.

Where was this said? Can't find it.
