Any other pitchers on the market, either via FA or through trade that we could get at this point?

Free agents-- Colon,Kyle Lohse,Livan Hernandez,Matt Clement Thats all I can think of now

Yech. Pretty slim pickings.

I loved 03 so much I'd probably be happy if they signed Clement.

Update

For all the crazy Cubs fans we've got here: Stark says they've talked to the Orioles about both Brian Roberts and Erik Bedard, but couldn't pull off a deal for both. They favor Roberts even though they need Bedard much more.

That's realistic. I don't think we have what it would take to get Bedard unfortunately. And yes, I'd rather see Bedard here over Roberts.

I hope the Reds don't get Bedard. That would really, really suck.

That would mostly really really suck for Bedard. I think they will give up too much to get him should it happen.

Why? It would be several steps up from Baltimore.

His numbers would suffer a bit. GABP isn't that much more a hitter's park than Camden, but enough to make a difference, I think.

He'd also be going from working with Leo Mazzone to Dusty Baker. Not exactly a good thing for a young pitcher with a history of injuries.

If this trade happens and DeRosa can't play SS every day, I'd trade him.

This would be a splendid time for Bruce Miles to make an appearance.

Has anyone put up the Bruce signal?

I don't understand why. His perceived trade value is probably still lower than his production (the utility player label). If DeRosa then were traded, and I can't see him realistically being moved in a deal for a SS, then who backs up 3rd base? Who is the 4th OF?

Plus, I can't see him being enough to trade him straight up for anything. We could dig further into our system to trade DeRosa+prospects for a starting pitcher, but I don't see how that helps the Cubs more than DeRosa does.

DeRosa for SS 2008!

Anyway, if its at this stage shouldn't we hear something tonight/tomorrow?

I would think so. We'll see how valid the insiders are. And yes, I know they broke the Tejada trade before it happened.

This has probably been asked, but does DeRosa have the arm to play SS? Could he gun down a runner on a ball fielded deep in the hole?

He plays third base without any problems throwing across the diamond in a timely fashion, I can't imagine he'd be any worse than Theriot arm-wise at shortstop.

Can Theriot?

They are talking about middle infield on Sports Central. Kaplan is saying that the Cubs have already told Theriot that he is their guy at SS on opening day.

I don't think DeRosa is going to play SS.

How have the Cubs not realized Theriot sucks?

I could live with it, given the rest of the lineup. But Theriot is never gonna be more than an average-below average starting shortstop.

Nope, the conversation went something like ......Theriot is the Cubs guy and now that he knows he will be the everyday player, he will be in better shape coming into Spring Training next year. Apparently, the Cubs think he wore himself out last year.

DEROSA played SS all the way up through the minors in the ATL system. He had no where to play when he got to the bigs because of rentaria and he couldnt move to second because of giles. Derosa had to move to utility player. This was in the VineLine with Fontenot and Theriot on the cover.

At least initially. Lou's proven that he'll play guys who are performing (see a hot Theriot over Izturis) and while Theriot will likely start the year, if DeRosa plays well and proves he can handle short, I really think Lou will ease him in.
