Second hand testimony about something Roberts admitted about using twice in 2003 shouldn't drive his price down, sadly. All it proves is that Roberts got good when he didn't do roids. He sucked in 2003, got good in 2005, as he was beginning to enter his prime.

no, it proves he started doing them in 2003. when he stopped is unknown.

I highly doubt he is still using HGH.

Why do you doubt it? It's not like he could get caught if he is using. There's no test for HGH yet.

A statement by someone who isn't Brian Roberts says that in 2004 Roberts admitted that he did it once or twice in 2003 and at the same time in the report said Roberts never tried them before when they lived together, and he never thought he used them before, to me, says that Roberts tried them on a couple occasions one season to try and get an edge and then stopped.

But it's all heresay and can be interpreted any way someone wants it to be until Roberts himself comes clean. IMO though, judging from Bigbie's words, it seems like Roberts was just trying to see if they would give him an edge and he didn't care for them and stopped using, but whatever.

We certainly lack a good smoking gun like cashed checks or better hearsay with Roberts. It isn't even like Clemens where you at least have a guy saying "yeah, I injected him with the stuff for a long time".

I'd hope the accusation drives the price down but I still wouldn't say no to him on the team.

How about Roberts gets to use all the drugs he needs, but he has to play shortstop? :D

Actually, it doesn't prove a thing.

in court, the court of public opinion is different. in the latter, Hendry may be able to get Roberts from Angelos, as angelos may now feel very differtnly about roberts (right or wrong)

again, what SHOULD stop hendry from getting him is DeRo, who is every bit as capable.

Hmmmmmm, let's see. The commish will handle each case individually. So, if Roberts goes to the Cubs, you don't possibly think that the Milwaukee-based commish would hand down a stiff suspension on him during the season, let's say, when the Cubs and Brewers are running 1-2 in the standings, do you? Naaaaaah...

Yeah, can't say as though I think that either.

Why am I typing under what appears to be your sig line? Hmmm. Anyway, if Selig did that, he'd be in a ton of hot water with the player's union.

The report mentioned nothing about HGH in relation to Brian Roberts.

Roberts being named will probably stop the Cubs pursuit of him - for a couple of days until things settle down.

For the moment, teams still have to conduct business -- and it won't happen in a vacuum. At the very least, the contents of the Mitchell report will make clubs step gingerly. One National League executive, who requested anonymity, said that Roberts' brief mention in the report doesn't necessarily preclude the Orioles from trading him. But it will prompt the parties involved to exercise extra caution.

"Is Brian Roberts going to get traded tomorrow? No,'' the official said. "Would a team with interest in him go ahead without checking on this? No. But you also have to see what Baltimore's position is on the whole thing. Everything is up for review right now.''

Here is the latest report from one of the Orioles insiders talking about Roberts:

I heard he's staying.

That's it right now, so hopefully we'll hear more explanation is if that's temporarily staying or staying through the whole offseason later.

To be fair, there seem to be other sources who still think the trade will be going through eventually.

Considering analysts and journalists have already singled out his case as being one of the flimsiest in the report, I doubt it.

According to one of the insiders on the Orioles board, he's heard that Roberts is staying now. I'm actually glad to hear this. Not because Roberts possibly has done roids or HGH but because he would be IMO a small upgrade over DeRo. That being said, the talent we were willing to give up for Roberts could be used for an upgrade elsewhere.

Completely putting aside whether or not the Cubs should trade for him and all that entails, I'm pretty disappointed that the Mitchell would put something that flimsy in his report. Edited by Elrhino

I agree unless Hendry is determined to get another second baseman.

Just curious, what makes one an "insider" on the Orioles Board?

Do they ever indicate exactly who they "hear things from"? An Oriole offical? talk radio? some guy that knows some guy that knows .. . .?

How reliable have you found these guys to be?

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see that. After all, he was gunning hard for Matsui and Roberts. I think Hendry doesn't see SS as a hole and he's content with Pie in CF. Truth is, I want to see Pie start at CF, even if he struggles for 2 months. As far as Theriot, yes, he's not that good offensively but his Pecota numbers are actually decent and aside from Cedeno which is another question mark just like Theriot it will be hard to find an upgrade through trade. I love the idea of having Murton in Left, Fukudome in CF, and Soriano in Right, but we all know that isn't going to happen which downright sucks. I still would love a trade for Teahen, even if it will cost us prospects but I see no reason why KC would get rid of their guy when he can play the OF, DH, and 1B.

No idea to be honest but it was mentioned in one of the threads that these guys are legit. They called the Tejada trade before it happened, that I'm sure about. As well as other trades that went down before they were public.

I don't think Hendry is determined to get another second baseman. I think he's determined to get another lefty bat in the line up. If that lefty bat came from SS, C or 2b, it probably wouldn't matter that much to Hendry.

Of course, by changing to this course, he makes himself look rather stupid. He's the one who gave long term deals to Lee, Ramirez, Soriano and DeRosa, all right handers and playing some positions that it is easier to find left handed hitters than say SS and C.

Yeah, he has painted himself into a corner if that's his line of thinking.

So you think it's possible that he'll go to CF or Right to get that left bat then? I don't think there are any left handed SS available....unless the D'Backs want to give up Drew!

Posted

Actually I think we already got that bat. Little known guy named Kosuke Fukudome.

I would have liked Roberts on the team and at the top of the order, but it's such a minimal upgrade over DeRosa that you guys are right. The prospects dealt would be put to better use upgrading at short or adding an arm to the rotation.

The poster named Peace21 seems to be the insider with the best info over at orioleshangout. He's broken a few things before, including the Tejada deal a couple days ago. Here's what he wrote this morning:

Lets get back to talking trade talks. Alot of things will start to pick up. Bedard and Roberts should be dealt before Christmas. And for certain, Roberts wont be affected by the report..per Cubs.

Hendry really wants Roberts. And Pie is expected to be in the deal. Gallagher will definitely be in any deal.
