• The Orioles' Andy MacPhail left Nashville late Thursday morning. So that makes it official -- the Orioles won't be making any deals here. Their talks with the Cubs about a trade for Brian Roberts have been back-burnered while the Orioles prioritize talks about Bedard and Miguel Tejada. But what we found on that back burner is that there is mutual interest in a deal that would send Roberts to the Cubs for pitcher Sean Gallagher, plus a second player that still needs to be determined. Despite speculation Felix Pie could wind up in that trade, teams that have talked to the Cubs about Pie say he would only be movable in a much bigger deal.

All that excitement last night turns out to be for nothing. We need some Cubs' news already. We're all going crazy.

Eh, not for nothing. It still looks pretty possible that we'll end up with Roberts based on that. Just won't get the instant gratification we all want. Either way, opening day's 4 months away.

Its cautiously optimistic news. I didn't really expect a deal to get done today, but its good to see that there is something to this rumor and its no where near dead.

Maybe Hendry made a decent offer for Tejada and Roberts and the O's are going to look around and see if they can get a better one.

To me it sounds like working out the Roberts deal is going to be a lot easier for them than Tejada and Bedard, and they want to work on the hard stuff. Hendry really is in no rush, if it falls through we're still fine. And by letting them trade Tejada and Bedard first, they save face. They know he'll probably put in a trade request if they have a firesale, which will let them not look like they dumped Roberts. And no doubt if someone blows them away for Tejada and Roberts the deal could fall apart.

Not too worried about waiting this one out.

Yeah, actually now that I think about maybe the O's want to see what they get for those two guys before asking for players that would match up from the Cubs.

I doubt it. The Orioles had a lot interest from smart(er) GMs for Tejada and Bedard, so they were interested in that more than the Cubs pathetic trade idea for Brian Roberts. I think I should kidnap JH and impersonate him for the offseason. With Bradley out I'll grab Greene, Fukudome and Clement or Lieber, hoping one of them with Prior would stick, call that idea the Walt Jocketty plan. The Cubs would look a little something like this:

vs tough righties

1. Kenny Lofton, CF

2. Kosuke Fukudome, RF

3. Derrek Lee, 1B

4. Aramis Ramirez. 3B

5. Alfonso Soriano, LF

6. Khalil Greene, SS

7. Mark DeRosa, 2B

8. Geovany Soto, C

vs lefties and crappy righties

1. Alfonso Soriano, LF

2. Kosuke Fukudome, CF

3. Derrek Lee, 1B

4. Aramis Ramirez, 3B

5. Khalil Greene, SS

6. Matt Murton, RF

7. Mark DeRosa, 2B

8. Geovany Soto, C

Rotation:

1. Carlos Zambrano

2. Rich Hill

3. Ted Lilly

4. Jason Marquis

5. Mark Prior/Jon Lieber/Matt Clement/Sean Marshall

Bullpen

RHP - Ryan Dempster

RHP - Carlos Marmol

RHP - Michael Wuertz

RHP - Kerry Wood

LHP - Scott Eyre

LHP - Neal Cotts/Donald Veal

I'd go to war with that any time of the year. The offense would score roughly 850 runs and the pitching staff would allow roughly 700. That's a 95 win team. Note: I estimated runs scored, it could be more.

So, I read the original rumor and the posts up to about page 5. But now we're on 29 and I'm not reading 24 pages. Does someone want to give me a quick summary of where things stand, now?

You're in Fantasy Land (a.k.a College) and you don't have time to read 24 pages?

show me where I said I didn't have time.

I just don't have the desire.

Why would someone desire NOT to read the greatest thread ever? The sea lions alone make this the greatest thread ever.

The Soriano signing thread takes offense to this comment.

With the lack of lefties in the pen, how's the righties success in getting left handed guys out of that bunch? I don't have a lot of faith in Cotts/Veal.

I don't think the Cubs are going to get Greene because of what the Padres may want....depending on of course what else the Pads acquire during the off season SS wise.

The Cubs nixed a Khalil Greene deal at the trade deadline, unfortunately. I believe it was Greene for Pie straight up, would have been a great move.

Well first things first, I wouldn't have traded Will Ohman. Lefties hit .236 against him last year. The smart GMs in the league traded for him, unfortunately. Jim Hendry's moves already cripple my plan to a certain extent. I don't think Veal or Cotts do much. I'd probably try to look at the options. Jeremy Affeldt is probably the number one guy on my list there. I like Affy a lot. I'd probably try to start him though...Marshalls big duece murders lefties. Why not?

There's also the possibility that MacPhail thinks Angelos will not get in the way if he's dealt Tejada and Bedard first.

A lot easier to convince your boss that you have a commodity who needs to be dealt at maximum value when the rest of the team are rookies. Man crush or no man crush. If Angelos likes him as much as he seems to, he'd have to prefer his (probable) friend playing for a playoff spot rather than playing to not lose 100.

Do we really need another reliever just to throw with his left hand? Marmol, Howry, Wuertz, and Wood were all pretty tough on LH hitters, and with the depth of the pen we can use Eyre as a true LOOGY, going after LH hitters that really struggle with LHP.

This is the source of the Pie-Greene business:

The Padres were rebuffed when they asked about Cubs center fielder Felix Pie in May – talks that, had they progressed, likely would have included shortstop Khalil Greene.

Why would the Cubs trade Pie for Greene straight up? Has anyone ever looked at Greene's career numbers in terms of OBP? If everyone is accepting adding players who know how to take pitches and draw walks (aka OBP monsters) as the Cubs main priority this offseason, Greene doesn't help you with that. I'll stick with Theriot despite his defensive inefficiencies.

no that wasnt it. it was before the ws.

it may have been the other way around, but i know that towers has a lot of interest in pie. something could be worked out if we made it a priority. if pie doesnt work pie + prior probably would. regardless its a very realistic option, although jh wont go down that path.

That was the one a month ago, was it really true or just talks like the rumors at the meetings? I'm curious if Bruce could confirm this one too.

oh its not a rumor right now. its just my plan. its something that *could* progress towards if we trade prior to the padres. so maybe we should pray for that....

Check out Greene's home/road splits. He hits a ton of fly balls and Petco really has a drastic effect on his numbers.
